At Gamescom 2023, we had the opportunity to play Square Enix’s latest multiplayer shooter, Foamstars, and get a first glimpse of this unusual game. Foamstars was one of the most colorful announcements at Gamescom.

Surf, Build, Shoot – This is Foamstars
One of the outstanding features of “Foamstars” is the ability to shoot foam from a gun and use it to build towers, construct walls or create lightning-fast “foam roads”. Characters can seamlessly switch between walking on their feet and surfing on a foam board, allowing them to always have the right mode of transportation at the ready. We could only dive into the game to a limited extent, but the mechanics are very promising and offer a lot of variety in the gameplay.
Teams and Avatars
In our test session, we had access to eight different characters, each of which offered a unique play style, their own special weapon and special abilities. The limited time allowed only a superficial insight, but the first impression was that the balancing of the characters was very well done. A balanced team with a colorful composition of characters should be decisive for success.
A Real Shooter
At the heart of “Foamstars” is the idea of a multiplayer shooter that focuses on instant and hard-hitting action. In contrast to games like “Splatoon”, the focus here is not on covering large areas with foam, but on taking out the opponents. The game mode is reminiscent of classic death matches, where each team has seven lives. As soon as these are used up, the best player so far is named “superstar” and must be protected from the opponents by his team.
Chaotic, Caried, and Promising
With “Foamstars”, Square Enix has created a promising and really cool game that, despite many parallels, clearly stands out from well-known titles. The chaotic gameplay, the creative game mechanics, and the variety of characters promise an entertaining gaming experience and long-lasting fun. We remain curious about new information and a release date for Foamstars.
