In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the developers are once again changing the Gunsmith, and I’m going to tell you about the novelties & losses you can expect with the 37 new weapons (114 in total).
Highlights – Gunsmith Changes in MW3
- MW3 & MW2 weapons are clearly separated in the menu
- Some features, such as weapon tuning, are being removed in MW3.
- The Gunsmith in MW3 gets a filter function for the characteristics of attachments.
- And much more…
All the Changes to the Gunsmith in Modern Warfare 3 (2023)
1. New Labels for Modern Warfare 3 & Modern Warfare 2 Weapons
In Modern Warfare 3, you’ll find a total of 37 new and 77 old weapons. The firearms from MW2 (2022) and Modern Warfare 3 (2023) are combined. To help you differentiate between this variety of weapons, there is now a clear separation of the games in the Gunsmith. The weapons from each game are marked with the logo of the COD series.
2. No Weapon Tuning in the Gunsmith of Modern Warfare 3 (2023)
A major difference between the Gunsmith in MW2 and MW3 is the absence of weapon tuning. With this feature, you could tweak literal screws in the last COD part to further improve characteristics such as mobility or ADS time. In Modern Warfare 3, the developers have now removed tuning for both MW3 and MW2 weapons.
The removal of tuning could be confusing for some players, especially in terms of blueprints and pro tuning that were available in Modern Warfare 2 but are not transferable to Modern Warfare 3.
Is this really a loss? I never used weapon tuning in about 200 hours of MW2 multiplayer gameplay because it was too much mechanics for too little result for me. I never noticed a real difference with my main weapons, but maybe you see it differently?

3. Adjustments to the “Pros & Cons” System in the MW3 Gunsmith
The Gunsmith in MW3 now shows you four pros and cons for the attachments on your weapon — previously, there were three. The arrows are either red for deterioration of values or green for improvement. There is also an entirely new symbol that shows the function of the attachment:
- 1 Arrow: Small change
- 2 Arrows: Moderate change
- 3 Arrows: Significant change
- Outlined Arrow: Indicates the function of the attachment.
4. Detailed Statistics in the Modern Warfare 3 Gunsmith
The Gunsmith will also offer you an extended view in which you can see seven different weapon categories and the effects of each attachment on these categories. These detailed statistics provide insights into headshot damage, target flutters, effective damage range, and many more aspects of your weapon.
5. The New Attachment Filter System in the Modern Warfare 3 Gunsmith
The last major adjustment/innovation for the Gunsmith in Modern Warfare 3 is the attachment filter. With this filter, you can search for attachments with specific properties in the Gunsmith.
What you can search for in the Attachment Filter:
- Recoil Control
- Rate of Fire
How do the changes to the Gunsmith affect gameplay?
These are all the novelties and adjustments that await you at the Gunsmith in Modern Warfare 3. Overall, I believe that multiplayer will benefit from the changes, as the filter and removed tuning allow us to build our favorite weapon faster and easier. However, what the community will think of the changed Gunsmith in MW3 will become apparent with the launch of multiplayer on November 10, 2023.
