In the popular anime RPG Persona 5 Royal, you take on the role of Joker, the leader of the Phantom Thieves. However, Joker’s real name is never actually mentioned. So what is Joker’s real name? We’ll clear it up!
What it’s all about: The popular anime RPG series Persona has already spawned many titles. There are also Animes and Mangas about the fascinating story of the phantom thieves. The main character is often Joker, the leader of the troupe, and in the game Persona 5 Royal, a nameless hero. Joker is merely his alias in the Phantom Squad when he is in the meta/dream realm. But what is his real name, and what is Canon?
This is Joker’s Name in Persona 5 Royal.
Basically, Joker has two names, but only one of them is widely canon, that is, recognized by the fans. Officially, the developers don’t want to say anything about it either.
- Ren Amamiya
- Akira Kurusu
Why two names? Joker does not have an official name for the game. But there are these two names in circulation. Akira Kurusu is his name in the manga, Ren Amamiya is his name in the anime based on the game. Thus, the name Ren Amamiya is also more in circulation than Akira, since the series is more known than the manga.
Ren Amamiya also makes more sense from the meaning of the name. For example, Ren stands for “rain”, and Amamiya stands for “palace”. And if you paid attention in Persona 5 Royal, both words also apply. Because Joker first meets his buddy Ryuji while it’s raining, and the first Meta-Realm where they fight Kamoshida is also a palace.
On the other hand, if you translate Akira Kurusu, it literally means “Killer Kill”. And that doesn’t really fit the reputation of the Phantom Thieves, who fight evil thoughts in the Meta-Realm, but never take the lives of actual living beings.
So, Joker’s real name in Persona 5 Royal is in fact Ren Amamiya.
