The upcoming survival game sequel State of Decay 2 is confirmed to have three separate maps. Undead Labs Community Director, Sanya Weathers, made the announcement in the official game blog, and shared a bit of information on the reasons behind this decision.
The size of the three maps will stay similar and close to the size of the original game in comparison. Instead of one big map combining the towns together, they will be separate them from each other to give each town its own individuality. This was done in the hopes of preventing players from feeling they are repeating aspects of the game.
“You should expect to see slightly different environments, definitely different landmarks and locations, different layouts lending themselves to different strategies, unique home sites, and even different mission types.”
This decision to avoid one giant map will allow the developers to add in other areas later in the game. It was pointed out in the blog that the developers do aim to allow the player to bring along their items and other survivors into the locations without any loss in the transition.
“Why’d we do it that way? Well, primarily, because it makes the game more fun. It really feels like you’re moving from one small town to another, and creates a tremendous sense of immersion. And perhaps counter-intuitively, it makes the world feel even bigger. You know how on one map (even one three times the size as the original game’s) the longer you play, the more you start feeling déjà-vu with every mission? That’s less of an issue with separate maps.”
The final build may differ as the testing commences, though everything stated so far regarding the maps is the intention of the developers. State of Decay 2 will be released in 2017 and the official release date is expected to be announced at this year’s E3 event.
