The Callisto Protocol: Fix Stuttering & Improve Performance

The Callisto Protocol has been released and is especially notable for its lousy performance and crashes on the PC. Guided.news has therefore tinkered and found the best settings and tricks to make The Callisto Protocol a bit more stable and performant.

Where do the problems come from? Many modern games collect the shader data in advance. Even before you dive into the actual gameplay, the game loads the shader cache in the background to lighten the load on the GPU (graphics card). The Callisto Protocol doesn’t do exactly that, here all shaders are calculated in real-time. Double stupid, if you consider that the game constantly wants to brag about performance-expensive lighting effects. At least you’ve recognized the problem, the only question remains: How do you improve the performance of The Callisto Protocol? (What are your experiences? Vote – even without registration)

How would you rate the performance of The Callisto Protocol?

Here’s how to improve Performance and Stutter in The Callisto Protocol!

Disclaimer: There is no universal trick to improve performance. There are an infinite number of different PC setups out there. We were able to increase the average FPS by around 10 – 15 FPS with the same settings below. Our test system contains the following hardware:

  • CPU: Ryzen 9 5950x
  • GPU: RTX 3080 ti
  • RAM: 64 GB – DDR 4 Ram (3400 mhz)
  • SSD: Samsung Evo 980 pro

Change your Direct X Settings: To make The Callisto Protocol at least a bit smoother, you should switch from Direct X 12 to Direct X 11 right at the beginning. You can find the setting in the options under graphics settings and then “General”. By far, this was the setting whose effect we felt the most. Thus, the switch to Direct X 11 raised the average frame rate by a good 5 FPS. The stuttering that many gamers report was also much less noticeable. However, we could not completely eliminate the stuttering in The Callisto Protocol.

Here you can find the setting for Direct X 11/12 in Callisto Protocol.

How well does The Callisto Protocol perform on high-end hardware? In its video, the YouTube channel Game Benchmarks shows the performance of The Callisto Protocol in different resolutions from 1080p to 4k as well as with and without ray tracing effects. Game Benchmarks uses an RTX 4090 for this:

What are your experiences with the Callisto Protocol’s performance? Are you generally satisfied already or do you prefer to wait for the first patches to improve the jerkiness?
