Recent developments in The Sims 5 suggest that the new part of the popular series could be completely free to play but with microtransactions on the market.
Here's the deal: The fifth part of the popular series The Sims is currently in development, even in a relatively early phase. A job posting from EA has now caused quite a stir, as the exact requirements propose that The Sims 5 could become a free-to-play title.
The fact that fans can play The Sims for free is not a novelty in itself. The fourth part of the game series was also offered for free, but only sometime after its release. The Sims 5 could therefore be the first part that will be available as a Free to Play title from the start. However, this also means that EA will need another way to cover the game's development costs and make a profit on top of that.
The job posting mentioned earlier appealed to those interested in a position as head of "Monetization and Marketplace". Part of the job would be to manage an in-game marketplace for all Sims players, or a "buying journey" for them. This job description already sounds very suspiciously like microtransactions or some kind of subscription, Battle Pass, or similar.
Where the journey ultimately goes, probably remains to be seen. The Sims 5 will still be in development for some time. However, according to the wording of the job posting, especially in light of the recent free parts of the Sims series, a release as a free-to-play title seems quite conceivable.
