Oil is an important resource for crafting in ARK: Survival Evolved. We recommend you put some points towards increasing your oxygen capacity. Doing so will allow you to move faster and hold your breath longer underwater. You might need to do some diving.
What’s the Oil For?
There’s a total of 19 items that require oil for crafting. One of the most important uses is gasoline. Place the black substance (along with Hide) in a Refining Forge or an Industrial Forge to create gasoline. At Survivethis we like to be thorough, so here’s a list of all the craftable items that require oil:
- Absorbent Substrate
- Barrel of Gunpowder
- Cooked Meat Jerky
- Fabricator
- Gasoline
- Grenades
- Homing Underwater Mine
- Industrial Cooker
- Industrial Forge
- Industrial Grill
- Industrial Grinder
- Prime Meat Jerky
- Propellant
- Re-Fertilizer
- Silencer Attachment
- Soap
- Spray Painter
- Tripwire Alarm Trap
- Vault
Collecting the Slimy Stuff
Finding oil is rarely tasking, but it should be relatively easier with these tips. To mine some, you will need to use a stone or metal pickaxe. The stone pick has a 0-1 yielding ratio, while the metal pick has a 0-10 yielding ratio. In this regard, when mining yourself, you’ll ideally use the metal pick. However, the most effective miner isn’t you. The Ankylosaurus and Dunkleosteus are the best oil miners in the game – that is, if you can tame them. You can also tame the Megalodon and the Ichthy, though they’re not as effective.
After choosing the method you’ll be using to mine the fossil fuel, it’s time to start looking for it. There are three primary environments in which oil nodes spawn: the ocean, underwater caves, and the Snow Biome beach.
Underwater Caves
The underwater caves offer the best amount of oil in ARK: Survival Evolved. You can mine a relatively large quantity in just one underwater cave. Make sure to make preparations beforehand however, we recommend gearing up with Lazarus Chowder and a Scuba Tank. In conjunction, using an underwater dinosaur would greatly benefit the expedition.
The Ocean
There are plenty of oil nodes scattered across the ocean. The nodes are easily recognisable as they emit dark streams of black stuff that floats to the ocean surface. Southwest of the island, on the coast towards the red tower is a definite hot-spot that we highly recommend. They frequently appear in the shallow waters along the cliffs, and are relatively easy to mine without using up much oxygen. The biggest threat when mining in the ocean are the sharks, so keep an eye out when scouting the area.
Snow Biome
The Snow Biome is the only option for surface nodes. They spawn along the Northern coast and on icebergs. Because many players are seeking to avoid the dangers in the water, you may find that the Snow Biome has already been raided of all it’s worth if playing on a multiplayer server. But don’t give up hope, the oil will re-spawn, it’s just a matter of waiting.
