Although Call of the Wild: The Angler is a simulation, the title plays relatively arcade-heavy compared to the competition. That’s why it’s also well suited for beginners who want to try out a fishing sim for the first time. The tutorial also introduces newcomers to the basics of fishing quite properly, but still leaves some questions unanswered.
To prevent you from throwing your fishing rod into the corner in frustration after only a short time of playing, we have compiled the most important tips about CotW: The Angler in this guide. Among other things, we’ll tell you how to earn money effectively and which fishing rod you should buy first.
Call of the Wild: The Angler – What you should absolutely consider as a newcomer
Tip #1: The right rod for beginners
Which rod do I use at the beginning? You won’t start your career in Call of the Wild: The Angler empty-handed, but the fishing rod you have at the beginning is anything but usable. Therefore, you should buy another rod as soon as possible.
Keep in mind that you will need to purchase not only the rod itself, but also fishing line, reel, hooks, and bait – so the cost will significantly exceed the price of the rod alone. If you’re looking to replace your starter rod, we recommend the following setup, which will keep you well-equipped for the first few hours of play:
- Spinning rod Vizier (525 credits)
- Spinning rod reel Iago (425 credits)
- Fluorocarbon line 3kg (160 Credits)
Alternatively, you can use this equipment
- Spinning rod Jafar (750 Credits)
- Spinning rod reel Brugden (650 Credits)
- Fluorocarbon line 7,5kg (200 Credits)
What do I buy later in the game? When you have farmed a total of about 6,000 credits (see below for tips on earning money), buy the following setup:
- Baitcasting rod Grey Heron (3,500 credits)
- Baitcasting reel Mediator (2.000 credits)
- Fluorocarbon line 20kg (320 credits)
Tip #2: Earn money effectively
How do I earn money? If you want to buy fishing equipment, you need money – or in the case of Call of the Wild: The Angler, credits. The tutorial doesn’t really explain how exactly you can earn them in the game, but there are several ways to get money.
You can farm large sums of credits especially effectively at the beginning of the game by exploring the game world. Especially with the beginner’s rod, it is difficult to catch really worthwhile fish right at the beginning. That’s why it’s a good idea to first explore Golden Ridge Reserve extensively to earn enough credits to buy better equipment. To do this, simply follow the quest “The Golden Tour”, which you’ll unlock after the tutorial.
Can I also earn money with fishing? However, if you want to cast your fishing line directly, you should first concentrate on catching perch. The first fishing challenge at Diamond’s Peak takes you directly to a bridge where you can catch perfect American river bass. Alternatively, head to the northernmost lake of the Golden Ridge Reserve, where you’ll find trout bass very well.
Speaking of fishing challenges: If you take a closer look around the starting area of CotW: The Angler, you’ll see several bulletin boards where you can accept special challenges. Be sure to accept all of the available challenges right away.
Especially the fishing challenges are quite doable even for beginners at the beginning of the game and provide you with a good income. They also ensure that you get to know the subtleties of CotW: The Angler and unlock various fast travel points along the way.
Tip #4: Report plants
What else is there to do? Early on in the game, you’ll meet the ranger at the ranger station, who is introduced to you during the tutorial. The ranger gives you the task of reporting invasive plants and other special discoveries in the game world.
You should definitely do that, because you’ll get a lot of credit for it. So always keep your eyes open when you’re out in the open game world of The Angler.
