COD: Modern Warfare 3 has been released, but I encountered the first problem in the campaign (which is not playable for all pre-order customers): My game seemed to have an FPS cap. I’ll tell you how to deactivate the frame lock and uncap your FPS in MW3 now.
- Modern Warfare 3 has a built-in FPS cap.
- Frames are locked according to monitor refresh rate or settings.
- It requires adjusting the refresh rate setting or using external software solutions.
How can you uncap FPS / disable Frame lock in MW 3
If you played Modern Warfare 2 on PC and enabled a frame limit in the menu, it will carry over to Modern Warfare 3. Here’s how to disable the FPS limit and uncap your Frames:
- Open the graphics options of Modern Warfare 3.
- Go to display settings and scroll to the 8th option called “Custom Frame Rate Limit.”
- If it’s set to “Custom,” open the drop-down menu using the arrow.
- Set your desired FPS value here or disable the option entirely.
- Disabling the FPS lock will give you unlimited frames (as much as your hardware can handle).
The above solution is the approach that uncapped my FPS. If that wasn’t your issue, don’t worry, I have a few more approaches. Not in the mood to read, then watch this guide:
Disable software solutions like RivaTuner to uncap fps in MW3
If, like many other players, you use overclocking software like MSI Afterburner, you might have also installed RivaTuner. RivaTuner is software that allows you to check your FPS, frametimes, hardware utilization, and much more in-game, but it can also lock your FPS. Check if you’ve done that:
- Open RivaTuner and look on the right side of the application.
- Here you’ll find two fields with a number in them called “Framerate Limit” and “Scanline sync.”
- If Framerate Limit has a number other than 0, that’s your FPS lock.
- Simply deactivate the cap/lock by entering a 0. That’s the signal to RivaTuner to remove the limit.

FPS Lock due to Monitor Refresh Rate & V-Sync
My final approach involves your hardware itself: How many hertz refresh rate can your monitor handle? Entry-level models often come with 60 Hz, meaning they can display a maximum of 60 FPS. Better models have 100 Hz, 120 Hz, 144 Hz, 175 Hz, or more, allowing them to display 120 FPS, 144 FPS, and so on.
In the settings of Modern Warfare 3, you can find your refresh rate under display. Check what number it is set to and see if you can use a higher setting. If not, does the number shown there match your maximum FPS value? If YES, then check if you have the “V-Sync” option enabled. Disable it to unlock your frame rate.
If you want to check how many hertz your monitor can display, follow these instructions:
- Right-click on your desktop.
- Open your Windows display settings.
- Click on Advanced display.
- Here you’ll find information about your selected screen, including the Hz value.
Those were all the methods to remove your frame lock / FPS cap in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and unlock unlimited FPS. If you have any further questions, we invite you to our Discord server as always, where the other authors and I will personally answer your questions (via Linktr.ee).
