10 Tips & Tricks for Beginners and Newbies in Warhammer 40k: Darktide
Are you a complete beginner and looking for a quick beginner guide for Warhammer 40k: Darktide? Then here are 10 tips and tricks to help you get started in the co-op adventure.
Tip 1: Know your Enemy
The first tip for beginners deals directly with your enemies. There are quite a lot of them. There are four types of enemies in total. Besides the normal horde enemies, there are also elite and especially strong enemies.
So that you don’t have to play against all enemies even as a beginner, we have compiled an overview of all enemy types in Warhammer 40k: Darktide. Here you’ll learn how to exploit the strengths and weaknesses of the enemies to get through the game with few losses.
Tip 2: Play as a Team
The second tip sounds relatively banal for a co-op shooter, but it is very important – make sure you have a balanced team play. Playing in a team is not only the key to success but also brings you and your fellow players a number of bonuses. Especially as a newbie, it’s not immediately obvious that the four different classes always bring a bonus to the entire squad. The veteran, for example, ensures that on an elite kill, nearby players get a small amount of ammunition.
Shield Regeneration: Darktide also has an ingenious system in place that forces players to stay together. If you separate from your group, your shield will no longer regenerate. If you are then overrun by a horde, you will have a hard time surviving this attack, especially as a newbie. Your group will know right away that they are dealing with a bloody beginner or a big ego.
Tip 3: Notice the HUD
The third of 10 tips in our beginner’s guide deals with the HUD. Here, of course, your health, weapons and ammunition are displayed by default. In addition, there are also some exciting features that can simplify your orientation in the game.
For one, there is an icon next to your health bar that shows you how many players are near you. Therefore, you always know exactly whether you are still with your squad or not.
In addition, there is also an icon for the ammunition of your teammates. Next to their icons you will find a differently colored ammunition icon. So if you find ammunition and see that your mates could rather use it, you should ping them and maybe hand them over.
Tip 4: Communication is the Key in Warhammer 40k: Darktide
Tip number 4 deals with the communication between players. When playing with random players, you should use in-game voice chat. Many newbies may not dare or feel confident enough when it comes to speaking English. But you can use the shortcuts for that. You can also communicate with your mates through the game and its mechanics. For example, if you ping an elite enemy, it will be highlighted in red for everyone to see.
Tip: If communication is very weak and your mates don’t want to communicate either, you should always follow the crowd when in doubt. If two players run to the right and one to the left, follow the two players. Hopefully the third will then join you again.
Tip 5: Combine Melee & Ranged Combat
In Warhammer 40k: Darktide there are four different classes and each of them has its own ranged and melee weapon. We highly recommend you combine both systems. Especially at higher difficulty levels, it’s important not to focus only on ranged or melee combat. It is therefore a good idea to make your fighting style dynamic and always depend on the situation.
However, as a beginner, you need to gain experience in the game first. So don’t worry if the balance is not right in the first two rounds. But keep in mind that the balance can be worth it.

Tip 6: Keep Moving
Especially as a newbie, the game can be very chaotic and stressful. The reason for this is that the game wants to create chaos and stress: enemies come in large numbers from every direction and attack you. Who wouldn’t panic at that?
Therefore, the next tip is that you must try to keep moving constantly. Don’t try to stop in one place to kill enemies, but always run to pass a more difficult target. Otherwise, you’ll quickly be overrun by a horde and something like that can quickly go wrong.
Tip 7: Block your Enemies
The next of our 10 tips builds on the previous one. Due to constant movement, you may find yourself with your back against the wall. But don’t despair and just use your blocking mechanics. You can use it to push your opponents back and sometimes even start a follow-up attack. This can buy you the time you need to escape from a dangerous situation.
Tip 8: Use your Combat Skill in Warhammer 40k: Darktide
The next tip in our guide refers to the Combat skill, which every class has. Especially newbies quickly confuse this skill with an Ultimate attack, which has a long cooldown. However, Combat Skills recharge quickly and are designed to be used more often. This way, you can be a great help in battle not only for yourself but also for your teammates.
Tip 9: Pay Attention to the Hit Indicators
In the penultimate tip, we advise you to keep a closer eye on your crosshairs. Every time you hit something, you’ll get a hit indicator, and we’ll tell you what the different colors mean.
White: If your crosshairs light up white, you’ve made a simple hit.
Blue: If the crosshairs turn blue, there are two possible scenarios – either you hit one of your teammates or you hit your opponent’s armor.
Orange: If the crosshairs are orange, there are again different possibilities. You either landed a head or weak point hit or scored a critical hit. Now you’re wondering how you can tell these two possibilities apart. Then listen carefully. Because a critical hit makes a louder and more unique sound.
Red: With a red crosshair, you have landed the last hit, and your target is no longer among the living.
Tip 10: Do Penance for Equipment
The last of our 10 tips in this guide doesn’t really help you get better at the game. However, it does ensure that you can choose new clothes for your characters. Besides the normal achievements that are available on Steam and the like, Darktide also has its own achievements that you can unlock. These are called Penance. When you complete these small challenges, you get new clothes and skins for your character.
