Some high-profile zombie games await us in 2021 and 2022. We have created a list that summarizes the best and that we of course update regularly!

Zombies remain: Zombies are the only classic horror opponents that cannot be killed - pun not intended. Successful games with the undead have released again and again for years. We now have a list of 7 of the most promising zombie games in 2021 and 2022.

You can look forward to these zombie games in 2021/2022

That is the choice: We have limited ourselves in this list to action games as well as shooter or horror games. The strategy genre will find its very own place in the future! Let's start with the most obvious game.

1. Dying Light 2

Genre & Gameplay: Dying Light 2 can be classified under the Action RPG genre. The open-world zombie game sends you over the roofs of a fictional European city with tons of parkour skills. Here you fight against the living and the dead, each with different skills, strengths, and weaknesses. Zombies are much more diverse in the sequel and mostly roam at night.

You will build your own weapons, mostly, knifes, swords, axes, and all kinds of meele weapons. Shoot-outs are very rare in Dying Light 2, but this makes the meeles more unique with electricity, or fire, or ice mods.

Story: 20 years after the first game, the Harran virus has mutated. Unfortunately, civilization didn't survive that. The developers call the setting "Modern Dark Ages". And that fits perfectly. Because in the as yet nameless city, different factions are fighting for supremacy. They use people like cattle and crown themselves kings and leaders.

You are Aiden, who has a mysterious connection to the Harran virus. You have to find out which one it is, because your memories are clouded.

Release: Dying Light 2 should now be released on December 7th, 2021 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S after several postponements. Dying Light 2 is likely to be one of the most anticipated zombie games in 2021.

2. Back 4 Blood

Genre & Gameplay: Let's change the genre from action RPG to coop shooter. In Back 4 Blood you have to destroy zombie hordes together with up to 3 (or AI companions). It is no coincidence that this is reminiscent of Left 4 Dead, because the same developers worked on both games.

Just like in L4D, you and your friends have to fight hordes of various enemy types and bosses. What is special here is that an artificial intelligence (AI) acts in the background, and adapts to you in order to make the round more difficult. It also changes the levels. You can explore the branched levels and search for materials or ammunition. There is also a promising PvP mode.

Release: Back 4 Blood will be available on October 12, 2021, for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5 as well as Xbox One and Series X/S. You can already pre-order the shooter now.

3. Daymare 1994: Sandcastle

Genre & Gameplay: Daymare 1994: Sandcastle is the sequel to Daymare 1998. The latter started as a fan remake for Resident Evil 2. But since Capcom had its own official remake in the works, a cease-and-desist request followed quickly.

Now the second independent title follows. Daymare 1994: Sandcastle again relies on third-person action. Set as a horror shooter, you have to fight against various monsters like in the Resident Evil games. In contrast to the role model, Daymare allows itself more freedom in terms of weapons and equipment. So there is now a weapon in the sequel that freezes opponents or shocks electricity.

Story: As the title suggests, Daymare is set in 1994 before Daymare 1998. In the role of Dalila Reyes you have to find out something that happened in an underground research facility. All employees are gone, what's left are monsters.

Release: Daymare 1994: Sandcastle will be released in 2022. Unfortunately, there is no more precise date yet. If you don't know the predecessor yet, we would like to recommend it to you at this point.

4. Taviana: The Origins

Genre & Gameplay: Born from the Arma 2 Mod "DayZ: Origins", developer Mayak Studio wants to create its own standalone version separate in any terms from DayZ. The gameplay should be very similar to that of DayZ Origins. The title Taviana: The Origins makes it clear that it goes back to the well-known map, including sectors A and B.

The gameplay still offers a similar loop as most survival games. Spawn, loot, fight, build and then comes the endgame. Taviana The Origins is heading in a new direction, at least in terms of the art design. Because the post-Soviet island of Taviana offers crazy Mad Max vehicles and base construction. In addition, wonderfully atmospheric monuments and cities. It feels truly Russian.

Story: A mad scientist named Dr. Ivan tested a virus on himself. So he is patient 0 and the virus spreads all over Taviana. The rich flee to an island in the ocean, build high walls pay some guards, and call it Sector B. The rest of the population is left to die on the main islands. From here on, you write your own story.

Release: The Early Access release of Taviana The Origins is dated for the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2021. A planned closed alpha should actually start in 2020, but has been canceled. Taviana is not one of the hottest zombie games in 2021/2022 for everyone, but veterans can look forward to it.

5. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Heart of Chernobyl

Genre & Gameplay: If you don't know Stalker, you've missed something. This pearl is one of the classic horror survival shooters. In Stalker 2 Heart of Chernobyl, there will be a large open world for the first time.

In this world you do quests, collect new equipment, join one of many factions and pursue your main goal: to find the mysterious artifacts that are scattered around the Chernobyl zone. Not only human opponents stand in your way, but above all mutants and supernatural beings.

Story: Not too much is known about the plot of Stalker 2. Although we know the general conditions, the personal goals of the new protagonist remain unknown.

Release: Stalker 2 Heart of Chernobyl will be released on April 28, 2022, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. A delay is currently not in sight. Unfortunately, we know that nothing in the gaming industry is set in stone.

6. The Callisto Protocol

Genre & Gameplay: Now comes a survival horror title from the makers of Dead Space. And according to the developers, it should be one of the scariest games of all time. Trapped on the Jupiter moon Callisto, you have to fight against creepy creatures and zombies.

As with Dead Space, the focus is said to be on the atmosphere and body horror. So from the third-person perspective, you explore the moon and its facilities in order to escape.

Story: Here comes the most mind-boggling fact about The Callisto Protocol: It is set in the universe of Playerunknown's Battlegrounds. But not at the same time, however. Hundreds of years have passed since the events in PUBG.

Release: The Callisto Protocol will be released in 2022 for platforms that have not yet been confirmed.

7. The Day Before

Genre & Gameplay: Similar to DayZ, the developers of The Wild Eight want to create a realistic open-world zombie RPG. Even if The Day Before is hotly anticipated by many, you should remain careful. The team of Fntastic has broken many promises and made a bad reputation for itself over the past few months.

The gameplay shown so far suggests a mixture of The Division and DayZ. You loot, fight against AI soldiers and other players, then move on. The Day Before wants to be hyper-realistic in all aspects such as physics, combat, survival, and the like.

Story: The Day Before does not offer a premade story. Instead, there is only a loose framework that you fill in with your personal journey. We have recently learned that you will be part of the rebuilding of civilization. But how the developers did not reveal yet.

Release: Until recently, the release period was Q2, 2021. But now you can only find "Coming Soon" on Steam. Unfortunately, Fntastic itself did not comment on a postponement.

8. Projekt Z

Genre & Gameplay: Projekt Z is a zombie shooter in Nazi Germany. With weapons from this era you have to face large zombie hordes and various tasks. This serves to free an island more and more from the influences of the Germans.

The order of the missions can be freely chosen and also influences the further course of your fight: For example, if you clean the sewers in front of a power plant, it will not be flooded. Zombies appear elsewhere and indifferent crowds or the story is influenced.

With completed missions, you collect new raw materials, weapons and equipment. The former is used to expand a small hub settlement from which you can accept new missions.

Story: Stranded in Nazi Germany, on a nameless island - maybe Sylt? It's really hell there. You have to gradually free the island from the Germans and their zombies. You should also come across dark secrets that you bring to light.

In advance, you choose one of four characters, each of which has its own story. The very first mission then serves as the Origin story for everyone.

Release: Unfortunately, there is no exact release date for Project Z yet. The development studio "314 Arts" would like to send the game to Steam Early Access in 2022 as a Free-2-Play game.
