Broken bones: this is how you avoid and heal it in an emergency

When does the break occur? Broken legs are mainly caused by falling from a great height. But damage from other players, infected or wild animals can also cause broken bones.

Even multiple falls from relatively low heights can cause your bones to give way – so don’t be bullshit.

Because, unlike in the past, the whole thing is no longer calculated by chance. On the other hand, your bones have their own invisible life point bar. If it empties to a critical point, your legs will break.

However, our tests show that these bone HP renew themselves extremely quickly, of course only before a break. Healing a real broken bone takes much longer.

The weight you are carrying also plays a big role. The heavier you are packed, the easier it is for you to break your leg in a fall.

Support the break with a splint

How to support your fracture: In the DayZ Mod and also at the beginning of the DayZ Standalone, you were able to heal a broken bone with morphine. That is no longer possible. Instead, you absolutely need a split pin, i.e. a splint. You craft this as follows:

  • 4 scraps of cloth (rags)
  • Optional: 1 bandage that you have to use four times
  • 2 short sticks

You then simply apply this rail with a left-click!

This is how painkillers help: But morphine and other painkillers are not useless. You can use it to walk a few steps. Because completely without pain-suppressing substances, you tip over from your virtual hiking boots after just one or two steps.

Allow the break to heal slowly

How to heal your fracture: With a splint, you can run indefinitely, but not sprint. In addition, the breakage status does not simply go away after use. Much more, you have to heal your bones. In order for a broken bone to heal in DayZ, you have to achieve the following values:

  • 2600 water
  • 4000 energy
  • Full Blood (5,000)
  • Full Life (5,000)

Without the debug monitor, you cannot of course see these values. Basically, all you have to do is drink and eat a lot and not suffer any further harm. Depending on whether you are wearing a split pin or not, you have to endure this situation longer.

In DayZ Vanilla, it takes around 30-40 minutes for the broken bone to heal. But this only applies in the event that you wear a split pin. Without it, it takes around 70 minutes, twice as long.

Interesting facts about broken bones in DayZ

Driving with Broken Bones: Not only can you still drive a car with a broken bone, but you can also still climb over low obstacles. However, you should avoid fights, especially in close combat.

Without a splint, you will be sent to the boards by every hit and have to get up first, impossible to win such a fight.

No more broken bones: If you have a split pin, you cannot suffer another break. However, you cannot preventively put on a splint so as not to break anything. You can only put it on if you already have broken legs.

This difference is made by the height: at a height of 1 to 3 meters, next to nothing happens. From 4 meters, your bone HP will slowly decrease. If you now jump very often from this height in a row, your legs will break. This extends up to approx. 10 meters, only then does a bone fracture become almost inevitable.

Nevertheless, it can also happen that you do not suffer a break from a distance of 12 meters. That is rare but possible. The whole thing becomes fatal from a height of 14 meters.
