There are many craftable items in Sons of the Forest, including several types of armor. In this guide, we will show you how to craft or obtain the different types of armor.
What armor can do in Sons of the Forest: Each piece of armor has a different function and will give you protection from your enemies. Sometimes more, sometimes less. To keep you up to date on which armor is the strongest on the island, or which armor is the quickest to craft in the beginning, we have the following guide for you.

All Armors in Sons of the Forest
There are currently six different types of armor, four of which you can make yourself, one of which you can collect from mutants, and the last of which is hidden in a certain location on the island. The armors differ not only in their strength, i.e. the damage they absorb, but also in other factors. Since the different enemies will quickly make you realize that you need armor, we’ll now tell you how to get it.
ATTENTION: Since Sons of the Forest has just been released in Early Access, it is possible that there are more armors in the game that we are not aware of. It is also possible that the developers will add more armors as development continues. However, we will try to keep this article up to date. |

Leaf Armor
Even though the Leaf Armor is by far the worst armor in the whole game, it’s worth making it, especially in the beginning. Especially since the resources are very easy to get. Once you are a bit more advanced, however, you should start making better armor. Besides the rarer stuff, you only need a few leaves to make Leaf Armor.
You need these resources for the Leaf Armor
- 10x Leaf
- 1x Cloth
Hide Armor
The Hide Armor is the first upgrade to the Leaf Armor you probably started your journey with. It already provides solid protection by comparison. It will also keep you warm, allowing you to travel to the colder areas of the island. You’ve probably already figured out that you’ll need to get leather for the skin armor. There are several ways to do this, but probably the easiest is to sneak up on deer or stags with a powerful ranged weapon and take them down with a well-aimed shot.
You can also try to hunt the slightly stronger moose, they are much bigger and can take a bit more of a beating. However, it is often possible to corner them and finish them off with a few spear strikes or arrows. For hide armor, you will need two pieces of leather and one piece of cloth per piece of armor.
You need these resources for the Hide Armor
- 2x Animal Hide
- 1x Cloth
Bone Armor
The Bone Armor already protects you very well against all enemies, there is only one stronger armor that you can make yourself. As you might have guessed, you need bones, which you can easily get from the various cannibals that attack you in the beginning. Especially the filthy cannibals that attack you regularly in the beginning and run around on all fours are a good source of bones.
After you defeat them, you can cut off their arms and legs with the axe. If you place the arms and legs near a fire and wait long enough, you can get bones from them. There are other ways to collect bones later, but especially in the beginning you can get bones quickly. You will also need duct tape, which you can find everywhere, and rope, which you can usually find in the cannibal villages.
You need these resources for the Bone Armor
- 4x Bones
- 1x Duct Tape
- 1x Rope
Tech Armor
The Tech Armor is by far the strongest armor you can make yourself. Unfortunately, it also requires very expensive materials and access to a 3D printer. Since you will always need multiple pieces of armor, a complete Tech Armor will cost you a small fortune in resources. Cables, circuit boards, tape, and batteries are just some of the collectibles you’ll need for a piece of Tech Armor. You can find them in a few places around the map, but mostly in bunkers.
You also need a piece of tech mesh, which you can’t just find on the island, you have to make it on the 3D printer. Of course, you need the right amount of resin and access to the printer. For 250 ML of printer resin, you get one piece of Tech Mesh. As you may have noticed, the Tech Armor costs a lot of really expensive resources, so it’s not necessarily the best armor.
You need these resources for the Tech Armor
- x1 Tech Mesh (250ml Printer Resin)
- x1 Duct Tape
- x1 Batteries
- x1 Wire
- x1 Circuit Board

Creepy Armor
You’ll always have enough of the Creepy Armor in stock throughout the game. It’s one of the two types of armor you need to collect. The Creepy Armor is made from the skin of mutants, which basically means that all you have to do is skin the various mutants you meet along the way with a knife. You already have the creepy armor. Fingers and blind mutants are the easiest source of Creepy Armor.
The Creepy Armor protects you from damage almost as well as the much harder to make Tech Armor. However, because it requires much easier to obtain materials, it ranks slightly above the aforementioned Tech Armor, which is very difficult to craft. Wearing a full set of Creepy Armor will make you look like a mutant, but mutants and cannibals will still attack you. Cannibals can also wear Creepy Armor, but rarely.
These are the resources you need for the Creepy Armor
- x1 Mutant Skin
- x1 Knife
Golden Armor
The last armor that currently exists in the game is the Golden Armor. Just like the Creepy Armor, you have to find it and can’t make it yourself. There is no need to collect individual pieces of the armor, once you have the Golden Armor you will never need to collect it again. It never loses its durability and is always a complete set of armor, unlike all other armor where you have to wear several pieces of armor at once.
Contrary to what you might think, the Golden Armor is not the strongest armor in the game, it is still the Tech Armor. The Golden Armor does not protect you directly from damage, but reduces it by a small amount. On the other hand, it never breaks, so you don’t have to replace it. Originally, the Golden Armor wasn’t meant for protection, but to give you access to another area in Sons of the Forest.
How to get them, we have recorded in a guide: How to get the Golden Armor and Mask.
Are you satisfied with the selection of armor in Sons of the Forest, or would you like to see more different types of armor? We could imagine armor made of wood or bark, but also modern armor worn by the soldiers in the first cutscene. Let us know what you think in the comments!
