The first persistent rumors about a possible feature film from The Legend of Zelda universe emerged several weeks ago. Now Nintendo has officially confirmed what many fans have long been hoping for.
Bringing popular video games to the big and small screen as a series or movie has long been an established way of celebrating even greater success with fantastic worlds and characters. The Super Mario Bros. movie recently proved that such film adaptations can also be excellent and of high quality. The hero from one of the oldest video game series has delighted young and old fans.
Nintendo has, therefore, already gained good experience with the filming of video games. Now, the Japanese company is teaming up with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring one of its most successful game series to cinemas around the world. The action adventure “The Legend of Zelda” is to be released as a live-action film, i.e., not as an animated film, but with real actors and actresses.
Even though it is of course not yet clear who will play the protagonists Link and Zelda, there has long been speculation online about what the cast of a live-action film adaptation might look like.
Alongside Super Mario, “The Legend of Zelda” is probably Nintendo's most successful brand. The latest part of the series, “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”, has sold almost 20 million copies in total. His prequel “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” even cracked the 30 million copies sold mark.
In addition to US film producer Avi Arad (Spider-Man: A New Universe), Japanese star developer Shigeru Miyamoto is also said to be involved in the film. In addition to the Zelda games, Miyamoto has also developed hits such as “Mario Kart” and “Donkey Kong”.
