In Baldur's Gate 3, in every act, you can talk to the unusual NPC “Strange Ox”, where the quest “Help the Devilish Ox” begins.
That's what this guide is about:
The first time you meet the ox is in Act 1, namely in the Emerald Grove. This one usually stands next to other oxen that look exactly like him. You will only recognize him by his name, “Strange Ox”. Cast the spell “Speak with Animals” to start the dialog with him and begin the quest “Help the Devilish Ox”.
It soon becomes clear that the NPC is not an ox, but only pretends to be one. In Act 2 you can find the ox again in the Last Light Inn, in the stable next to Dammon.
In your conversations, be careful not to threaten the strange ox. Otherwise, you might provoke a fight against the NPC in its true form, which would destroy the quest. You must not kill the ox under any circumstances. In all conversations with him, be nice and curious, so that you gradually learn more about his past.
The third meeting with the ox takes place in Act 3, in a barn on a hill, very close to Rivington. Important: the strange ox will only be there if you haven't entered the Undercity yet! If you have already been to the Undercity, load a save game where this was not yet the case.
If you haven't approached the NPC in Act 1 or 2, you can still (start and) continue the quest “Help the Devilish Ox” in Act 3. Here, when talking to the strange ox, you must choose your dialogue options to help him get to the Lower City. The ox will then turn into a strange apple, which you must take into your inventory.
Once you enter the Undercity for the first time, the quest “Help the Devilish Ox” in Baldur's Gate 3 will be completed. As a reward, you will receive the Shapeshifter's Boon Ring.
Attention spoilers: In addition to the ring, after completing the quest you will also find a letter from the ox in your inventory, in which he writes to you that he owes you something. This debt is paid at the very end of the game when the ox unexpectedly appears in the final boss fight and supports you.
