Baldur's Gate 3 How to Beat Cazador

Taking on Cazador in Baldur’s Gate 3 is no small feat. After all, Cazador Szarr is not only Astarion's former mentor but also a very powerful vampire lord and a power-hungry scoundrel.

The fight against Cazador in Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3 is essentially the climax of Astarion's quest "A Pale Elf," as it decides the future of your comrade-in-arms. We’ve delved into this epic skirmish and will reveal the best combat tactics against this undead oppressor.

Best Combat Tactics Against Cazador in Baldur’s Gate 3

As soon as your vampire buddy Astarion has sufficiently insulted his ex-master Cazador, the latter binds his offspring to a ritual site to absorb him. Then, the heroes around draw their weapons to assist Astarion in his plight.

Let's go: Cazador has begun the ritual to absorb Astarion and must now be rendered harmless. (Baldur's Gate 3)

One of the biggest problems in this encounter is that Cazador Szarr, due to his quick evasion maneuvers, is hardly physically vulnerable. Often, you and your party end up being slaughtered by Cazador's minions. These minions pose a difficulty as they have high resistances and can significantly delay you during the fight against Cazador.

Conversely, summoning numerous companions and others doesn't give you an advantage, as Cazador continues to focus his attacks on the heroes and land them successfully. So, how do you take down such a boss?

1. Get the "Undead Rapier"

Go carefully to the lowest level near the elevator you used to enter. There you will find a treasure chest, which is rigged with traps. Let Astarion open the chest. Inside is a rapier effective against undead. Equipping Astarion with it makes the enemies of Castle Szarr less formidable.

2. Astarion Doesn't Have to Fall

When you first confront Cazador, you don’t have to do it with Astarion. Instead, leave the little vampire at one of the stairs leading down to the battlefield. Out of sight, out of mind, Astarion won't be bound to the ritual site and can deal significant damage to his hated master from a distance using ranged attacks from stealth.

3. Use the Arena in the Fight Against Cazador

You've likely noticed the significant depths surrounding the combat arena in Baldur's Gate 3. It's important to note that you cannot throw Cazador into these depths. If you try, the vampire lord will simply showcase his annoyingly good evasion maneuvers. However, you can use this tactic against his minions, the ghouls and werewolves.

Here's how to leverage the arena's depths effectively:

  1. Choose a Fighter or Barbarian: These classes are ideal for this strategy because they have enough strength and the right skills to push adversaries off the edge. Position your melee fighter near the abyss and assess your opportunities carefully.
  2. Perform Push Attacks: If one of Cazador's minions is standing close to the edge elsewhere, execute a push attack from a distance. This can be done with various abilities or spells that can move enemies.
  3. Push Minions Off the Platform: When one of the nuisances is near you, simply shove them off the platform. This tactic is valuable because it saves you turns in combat. The high resistances of Cazador's minions can significantly hinder you during the skirmish, so removing them efficiently is key.

By adopting these tactics, you can reduce the number of enemies you face directly, allowing you to concentrate your attacks on Cazador and his tougher minions. This strategic use of the environment can turn the tide in what is otherwise a challenging and resource-intensive battle.

You can, of course, run Mr. Cazador's minions into the ground (or try to). But it's better to push them into the depths without further ado.

4. Try Magic Against Cazador

Despite Cazador being a powerful wizard, he actually struggles against magical attacks. This applies to his transformed state too. Almost any weapon your characters carry can be effective against Cazador when they use magical attacks, especially those that produce sunlight.

With much satisfaction: Astarion turns the tables. (Baldur's Gate 3)

5. Make Extensive Use of Shadowheart's Abilities

As a cleric, Shadowheart is ideally suited for fighting the undead. Let her summon Spirit Guardians that inflict radiant or necrotic damage on nearby enemies and halve the movement speed of nearby minions.

These tactics should give you a significant advantage in the battle against Cazador and help you secure victory in this challenging encounter.

That's odd, I just push Cazador to the chasm moments ago 🤔. My Bard College of Swords did that to Balthazar and now Cazador.
