After over 100 hours of gameplay in Baldur's Gate 3, our editor Alex shows how to defeat Gerringothe Thorm and reclaim your gold from the statue.

In this guide, you'll learn:

  1. How to defeat the gold-stealing statue Gerringothe Thorm in combat.
  2. What you need to do to recover your gold from her.

Who or What is Gerringothe Thorm?

Gerringothe Thorm is a tough opponent in Baldur's Gate 3. You encounter her in the customs house of Reithwin in the second act of the role-playing game. This peculiar entity can be described externally as a mix of sumo wrestler and Buddha statue and is, in a sense, an anomaly.

Because its demand of "Give me all your gold" is usually heard from the mouths of highwaymen, but in this case, it's this living statue that wants to have, no, even devour your money. If you're not willing to satisfy its greed, or if you simply run out of gold, it leads to a fight. This guide will show you the best way to proceed in that case.

How to Beat Gerringothe Thorm in Baldur's Gate 3

The key to victory over Gerringothe Thorm (an eighth-level undead) lies directly in the cutscene where this cheeky artwork asks you for gold. While the cinematic interruption is ongoing, switch to the character change menu by using the corresponding icon at the bottom left of the screen. Change to any other companion there.

During the cutscene, use the green-marked icon to switch to the character menu. (Baldur's Gate 3)

Now, in the shoes of that character, release the "fetters" of your party, meaning, let them act separately. You do this using the icons marked in green in the lower screenshot. Why? Because it is crucial where you place your heroes in the environment before the battle.

In the next image (below), you can already see how this method works. You lead your party up to the roof of the customs house using the nearby ladder. There, you have a relatively "secure position" and can focus more on reducing Gerringothe Thorm's 600 hit points without worries.

So, enemies of the battle, including Gerringothe Thorm, are at a disadvantage against your party. (Baldur's Gate 3)

Always Push Them Away

Of course, you shouldn't let go of the advantage of your elevated position and, therefore, use shove attacks from a distance to push enemies further or keep them down. This works down to the lowest level of the customs house, allowing you to deal a significant blow to Gerringothe Thorm and its minions with your "roof chess move."

Don't concentrate your attacks on Gerringothe Thorm; instead, focus on taking out her minions – the faces. You can and should approach the faces with one or alternating characters to effectively fight them. After that, however, return to the elevated position.

By removing the minions from the battlefield, you significantly reduce Gerringothe Thorm's health points. At the same time, you secure the gold she has devoured. If you attack the silly statue directly, you'll lose your money in any case.

You're missing one of the biggest tips about this boss: one of her attacks hits you for damage based on how much gold you have. I was getting wiped out instantly again and again, until I took all my gold except 1gp per person and put it in a chest downstairs. The fight was easy then
