After finishing about half of your journey through Hogwarts Legacy, you will receive the quest “In the Shadow of the Study”. At the end of this quest, you can learn the unforgivable curse “Crucio”. This guide will help you complete the quest.

In this guide, you will learn:

  • How to start the quest “In the Shadow of the Study” in Hogwarts Legacy.
  • How to open Slytherin's door and find the Scriptorium.
  • Whether you should learn the Cruciatus Curse.
EN Hogwarts Legacy In the Shadow of the Study

The quest “In the Shadow of the Study” in Hogwarts Legacy rewards you with the Cruciatus Curse.

“In the Shadow of the Study” in Hogwarts Legacy

The quest “In the Shadow of the Study” in Hogwarts Legacy is one of the main quests in the game. It is part of the tasks surrounding your fellow student, Sebastian Sallow. So if you want to learn Crucio, you have to complete all of Sebastian's quests for “In the Shadow of the Study” to become available. The quest that immediately precedes this is called “In the Shadow of the Bloodline”.

This is just a conversation with Sebastian. As soon as this conversation is over, you can speed up the progress a little by opening the map and using the space bar to let a few hours pass. You may have to repeat this a few times until you get news from Sebastian again. Now you can start the quest “In the Shadow of the Study”.

Open the Slytherin's Door

Once you have started the quest, you must meet Sebastian outside the Slytherin common room. Use your magic compass (V button) to find the way. Talk to Sebastian and then find Ominis. He will show you and Sebastian the entrance to Slytherin's scriptorium. Conveniently, you are already in the right place after your conversation with Ominis. You should stop right here!

Use Revelio to uncover the three pillars of flame.

Cast Revelio to reveal three fire bolts. You must light these up with Confringo. Hurry, because you have to light all three bowls before the first one goes out again. As soon as all three bowls are burning, Slytherin's door will open.

Slytherin's Scriptorium and the Crucio Spell

Now you have to find a way. Shortly after the door, you have to repair the relief on the wall with “Reparo” and Ominis will open the next door. Behind it, several gates with locks await you, which you have to pick in complete darkness. Each lock works in the same way. Two symbols on each door show you how to open the lock using the corresponding snake figure next to the door.

Turn the two disks under the snake figures in such a way that the symbols given to you by the door are pointing forward. Caution: You only have a short time for each attempt. If time runs out before you have picked the lock, the snake will bite you, which also causes a bit of damage.

EN Hogwarts Legacy Slytherin Lock

You have to pick a total of three Slytherin locks.

To open the last door, either Sebastian, Ominis, or you must cast the Cruciatus Curse. Ominis refuses, so the decision now lies with you whether you use the curse on Sebastian or vice versa. At this point, you have to decide whether you want to learn Crucio or not. It should be noted here that the developers of the game have decided against the morality system that was originally planned. This means that whether you use unforgivable curses or not does not affect the course of the game.

As soon as the curse has been cast, the door to Salazar Slytherin's scriptorium opens. Inside you will find the Hogwarts Founder's spellbook and some more loot. Collect everything and leave the scriptorium through the large skull in the wall. This completes the quest “In the Shadow of the Study” in Hogwarts Legacy.
