You will notice the Aim Assist setting if you play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 with the controller. If you are wondering how the different Aim Assist types differ, we have the following guide for you.
What it’s about: The issue of Aim Assist is always a problem when it comes to shooters like Modern Warfare 2. Even though it is necessary so that players who use a controller can compete with players who use a mouse and keyboard, it has happened many times that this feature was not properly balanced. As a result, players who played with the controller were either at a strong advantage or a disadvantage. In Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Aim Assist has four different modes. We’ll explain the differences.

Aim Assist in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 explained
As mentioned, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has four setting modes for Aim Assist. Unfortunately, the game itself doesn’t explain how the modes differ from each other. However, since the setting can greatly influence your play style and your success in the rounds, we will give you more information about the individual modes.
To understand how the different Aim Assist modes work in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, we will first explain a basic difference between the two Aim Assist types currently used in games. There is a distinction between the “Rotational Aim Assist” and the “Slow-Down Aim Assist.”
- Rotational Aim Assist: The Rotational Aim Assist works mainly via the left analog stick. This especially improves the Aim during the “Strafe” movement. Tracking enemies in motion is also easier with this type of Aim Assist. This makes the Rotational Aim Assist best suited for a faster, aggressive play style that relies on hip fire.
- Slow-Down Aim Assist: Slow-Down Aim Assist improves aiming via the right analog stick. This type of Aim Assist is probably the more familiar one since it has been used in games for longer. Most players imagine the Aim Assist in the same way. The Slow-Down Aim Assist affects accuracy while aiming through your sights by slowing down your crosshairs when you are over your target.
The four different Aim Assist modes in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
The four usable Aim Assist modes in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 are the following: Default, Precision, Focusing, and Black Ops. Some settings are a mixture of the above-mentioned rotational and slow-down Aim Assist types. Others do without one of the types.
- Default: The default setting is Aim Assist, known from Modern Warfare titles. Rotational and Slow-Down Aim Assist is mixed here. In this setting, the slow-down Aim Assist always takes effect when you get closer to an enemy. Thus, this setting supports playing with sniper rifles less.
- Precision: As the name suggests, the Precision setting is more for precise and generally strong Aim players. The Aim Assist is only activated when you are above the target with your crosshairs. This is noticeable because your crosshairs “stick” more to the opponent. So once an enemy is under fire, your crosshairs will stay more precisely on that enemy, even if it is moving. This means that this setting is right for you if you use sights, sniper rifles, or rear sights.
- Focusing: The Focusing Aim Assist mode has been added to Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for players new to the controller. This mode seems to work similarly to Precision Aim Assist, except that the crosshairs stick to the enemy even more. This means tracking a target is easier once you have it in your sights. However, you can’t quickly switch between multiple targets. Only the Slow-Down Aim Assist is enabled here, as in Precision mode.
- Black Ops: If you were satisfied with Aim Assist in the various Black Ops titles, this is the mode for you. Like the default mode, it offers a mixture of Slow-Down and Rotational Aim Assist. The differences between these two settings are very slight, but if you’re a Black Ops veteran, this might be just the mode for you.
This is the best Aim Assist mode in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
When choosing the right Aim Assist mode, the question remains, of course, which mode is the best. Even though each Aim Assist mode supports a certain play style, two modes should only be used cautiously. These are the Precision and Focusing modes, as both modes do without the Rotational Aim Assist. Thus, you should only use these settings if you are sure you are especially strong in hip fire and close combat.
The two best modes are Default and Black Ops Aim Assist. The Black Ops mode is a bit ahead of the rest. Both modes use rotational and slow-down Aim Assist and thus support all situations in Modern Warfare 2.
The best Aim Assist mode is the Black Ops Aim Assist. |
