If you gradually complete the quests of the main story in Amazon’s online role-playing game New World, you’ll sooner or later meet Imhotep at the ruins of Hermopolis. He has a quest called “The Accursed Apophis”, which will challenge your grey cells quite a bit.
Here’s what it’s about: The quest “The Accursed Apophis” tasks you with exploring a mysterious burial chamber in the ruins of Hermopolis. The quest’s central part is a switch puzzle, which we explain in our short guide.
The Accursed Apophis – Solving the Switch Puzzle in New World
What do I have to do to start the quest “The Accursed Apophis”? You can only start this quest if you have already reached level 60 and completed the previous quest “Solve the Riddle”. Because the quest is part of the main story of New World, you should automatically get there if you follow the corresponding storyline.
How do I solve the Accursed Apophis switching puzzle? Follow the quest marker into the ruins and collect the three notes you find scattered on the ground.
Then go to the control element marked on the map. Here, you must now enter the correct glyphs to activate the mechanism. The correct glyphs are:
- Left column double X
- Right column single X
Then you just have to activate the switch to open the portal inside the vault. Enter the vault and collect the jar and the scrolls before returning to New Corsica. Look for Imhotep in the library to turn in the quest and collect your reward.
You can also watch the complete quest again in YouTuber Sipder’s video:

I failed the first attempt to kill Aphopis. I tried going back and have no idea how to get back to him. None of the quests light up. Someone told me to go to the aphphis rock.. which I have no clue where that is either. The stone I used to get to him in the first place no longer lights up.
Have you tried to cancel the quest and start it again? (Not sure right now if that’s possible. Never tried that myself)
