There are many different ways to advance in the Path of Exile endgame. The basis for all game mechanics is the so-called Atlas and the maps it contains.
As a newcomer, you quickly lose track of Path of Exile. As soon as you think: "Now I've played through the story, now I know my way around," you will be overwhelmed by the numerous endgame content. Even players who have already participated in one or the other league are still overwhelmed.
The atlas is the basis for everything that happens after the story. In our beginner's guide, we explain how the atlas works, how to fight your way through it, and why it's even important.
Once you defeat Kitava in Act 10, the Path of Exile endgame and Atlas will be unlocked.
The atlas is a composite of a total of 115 maps that are connected by paths. Your task now is to play through these cards. The starting point in the lower middle of the atlas is connected to four level 1 cards, which can already drop from act 8.
To complete a map, you must place it in your map device (map advice) and activate it. Six portals will then appear, taking you into the map. If you die, you return to your hideout and have five tries left. Once you defeat the map boss, the map is considered completed.
This is important: cards are divided into three suits based on their levels:
In order to complete all objectives of a map, the map items must first be modified. You must change the rarity of a white card (levels 1 through 5) to magic or rare using a transmutation orb or alchemy orb before activating it.
The status of a yellow card (levels 6 to 10) must be changed to rare with an orb of alchemy. The red cards (level 11 to 16) must be in rare status and then corrupted with a Vaal Orb.
There are several ways to get new cards.
Five of the NPCs you meet as you progress offer you Atlas missions in the endgame of Path of Exile. How many open missions you have is shown when you click on your map device:
The Atlas missions are either for white, yellow, or red cards. You get a new Atlas mission every day per NPC based on the highest map tier you completed the previous day. So if you completed a level 14 map on Monday, you'll get a new Red Atlas mission on Tuesday. You can also get random new missions for defeating map bosses.
The Atlas missions represent game mechanics from past leagues and, if completed regularly, provide you with numerous possibilities for your endgame character:
Completing certain challenges (e.g. clearing a level 16 map) will give you free slots to set your favorite maps. Designating a card as a favorite will increase that card's drop chance.
You have a total of twelve slots for favorite cards. Each time you favor a card, it gains a 10x multiplier on its drop chance when a card of that tier drops. Or you favor the same card 12 times, which stacks the multiplier on that single card up to 12 times, giving the card a 120x multiplier on its drop chance.
With these options, completing the atlas shouldn't be too difficult. You can still buy individual cards that just don't want to drop via the Path of Exile trade page or TFT.
