Cities Skylines 2: All Transportation List & Guide

Cities Skylines 2: train

Taxi

Taxis are immediately unlocked and only require you to build a taxi depot to function, but you should also place taxi stands on the roads. This type of transport is good only in the beginning, as it does not require much investment. However, taxis cannot carry many people and are as heavy in traffic as private cars.

Bus

Buses are also available at the very beginning of the game, but they have many more advantages than taxis. They also need a depot, but have a higher capacity and can even travel on pedestrian roads. For buses, you need to create routes that can be used both for transportation around the city and for connecting to other cities. You can also improve roads by adding sections that are only for public transport and taxis. Over time, you can upgrade your buses to electric ones to reduce environmental pollution.

Tram

Trams are an alternative to buses with more capacity and less air pollution but with more expensive maintenance and a much larger depot. They require rails to be built, but are a traffic burden if placed on public roads. However, standalone roads can also be created for the rails, and they can also be placed in pedestrian areas.

Subway

The subway requires large investments, a huge depot, and dedicated tracks, but it is one of the best options for public transportation. The reason is the large capacity and great convenience for citizens. Subway stations can be easily placed in the busiest areas or near airports, for example, without complicating traffic as the track can be laid underground.

Train

Trains allow transporting numerous passengers to the far corners of cities and between cities. They require the construction of train yards and tracks, but this pays off due to their speed, range, no traffic congestion, and minimal environmental impact.

Ships

Ships are quite a specific type of transport that needs to be managed wisely to be useful. They do not require depots but are costly and harbors take up a lot of space. Ships have the highest passenger capacity, so they are a great solution for traveling between cities and can also be useful within the city in places where there are no bridges.

Airplanes

Airports are extremely expensive, take up a huge amount of space, and have a rather small passenger capacity. However, they are very fast and can be useful for connecting between cities or some distant towns, but are definitely not suitable for use within the city itself. Also, planes do not create a load on the roads, but they are quite polluting and noisy.

Vans & Trucks

Vans and trucks will be the first to deliver cargo around the city. They will be the main method of delivery only until other methods appear, as they are rather inefficient on a large scale. However, they will always transport goods from distribution centers, only competing with trains.

Cargo Trains

Freight trains work in much the same way as passenger trains, but they also require cargo stations, which work as distribution centers. They are much more profitable than vans and trucks, which means that there will be a lot of traffic near the cargo stations, which should be taken into account when building roads. Nevertheless, this is one of the best methods of transporting goods that will definitely pay off the investment, as it has the same advantages as a passenger train.

Cargo Ships

Cargo ships have roughly the same advantages and disadvantages as passenger ships. They may not always be useful for inner-city transport, but they are a great solution for imports and exports due to their huge capacity. Freight ports also have distribution centers and can be upgraded to allow trains to deliver goods around the city and help relieve traffic near the port.

Cargo Airplanes

Passenger airports can be upgraded to accommodate cargo planes. Of course, they cannot carry a lot of cargo, but they are the fastest way to deliver it. Like passenger planes, cargo planes are best used for long-haul flights.
