Especially at the beginning of the game, the Dodo is the creature in ARK: Survival Evolved that you are most likely to encounter and from which you can most easily get the necessary raw meat, leather, and also extra small eggs.
Find out everything you need to know about the little bird in our guide to the dodo. But also how to catch him, tame him, feed him, and breed offspring too.
Appearance: The dodo is a small, feathered bird that somewhat resembles a chicken. He is small, has a tail made of many feathers, small wings, but a rather large beak.
Wild: The dodo is the most harmless creature you can encounter in ARK, it will not become aggressive even if you steal its egg. If you attack him, and he survives, he will run away.
Domesticated The only benefit of taming a dodo is that it lays its eggs faster than the other creatures, and you can use them to create the Basic Kibble. It's also the easiest way to get meat and hide, especially early in the game.
How to hunt the Dodo: It's best to use a bow to shoot the tranquilizer darts at him, as a crossbow can easily finish him off due to his low health. You can also knock him out or use a slingshot. However, there is also a risk that he will die in the process.
How to tame him: Once he's unconscious, put berries or kibble in his inventory and feed him that. To keep the dodo down and the stun value up, it's best to use narcotics or narcoberries. Usually, the dodo is tamed quickly, and you don't need extra narcotics.
Once you have tamed your dodo, it is important to know what it likes to eat. Dodos are herbivores, which of course makes the choice of food easier.
This is how you prepare the breeding: If you have a male and female specimen, you build an enclosure that is large enough at best. Put both dinos in the pen and set them to "wander" via the command menu. Alternatively, you can also switch directly to "Pair", but then there must always be a player nearby, otherwise the pairing will stop due to the rendering.
The breeding interval of a dodo is 18 to 48 hours.
How to Hatch Eggs: When you get a fertilized Dodo Egg from a successful mating, hatching begins. For this, the ambient temperature of the egg should be between 22 °C and 30 °C and in the egg incubator at 26 °C. According to default settings, the little dodo baby hatches after about 1 hour. After that, it takes about 1.5 hours of your attention, during which you keep putting food in its inventory.
Once it gains juvenile status, it can feed on its own. The entire maturing time takes about 15.5 hours.
