If you play ARK: Survival Evolved, sooner or later you will need oil and gasoline, for example, to operate higher-tech workbenches, items, or certain means of transport.
In our guide, we tell you what you need gasoline for, how to make it, and how to get the oil for it.
This is how you get Oil and other Resources for Gasoline in ARK
How to get Oil
With the Dunkleosteus: In order to easily get oil from the sea/ocean, you should tame the Dunkleosteus. With this, you can easily swim underwater to the oil stones. Oil stones are black and emit a trace of oil up to the water’s surface. The Dunkleosteus can easily bite through these stones with the help of its massive bone plates in its mouth and gets a lot of oil out of the stones for you. In our Dunkleosteus guide, you can read how to tame him quickly and easily.
Of course, you can also mine these stones yourself with the pickaxe, the method is simpler, but takes more time, and you don’t get as much oil as with the Dunkleosteus.
With the dung beetle: In addition to fertilizer for your plants, the dung beetle also gives you the advantage that it can extract oil from dung. To tame him, simply feed him the droppings left behind by your tamed dinosaurs. In general, the bigger the Dino, the bigger the heap, and the bigger the heap, the more oil.
With the Kraken (Tusoteuthis): The Kraken’s oily ink also counts as oil, which can be used to make gasoline. In order to be able to tame the octopus, you need black pearls.
Trilobites: You can find trilobites on the beach and in shallow water. You can farm chitin and oil from them by killing them.
TEK Dinosaurs: When killed, TEK Dinosaurs drop Oil, among other resources.
How to get a Ball of Frozen Gas (Aberration DLC)
In order to get Frozen Gas Balls, you need to place a Gas Collector on a Gas Vein, which can be found throughout Aberration. The gas collector will then extract the gas balls, which you collect afterward. Sometimes gas balls spawn near a vein, where you can simply pick them up.
In the Extinction and Genesis: Part 2 DLCs, you can create a gas ball by heating a condensed gas in a Refining Forge.
How to get Green Gems (Aberration DLC)
Green gems can be mined from green crystalline formations with a stone or metal pickaxe. You can find these formations throughout Aberration.
Likewise, Roll Rats can find or leave behind the green gems. Should you find one of these gems, the Roll Rats are likely to attack you.
In Genesis: Part 2, Green Gems appear in Loot Crates and can also be collected from Obsidian Asteroids.

How to make Gasoline in ARK:
To get 5x Gasoline, you need:
- 5x Hide
- 5x Oil
- fuel such as wood
You then make the gasoline by filling the furnace with wood, oil, and leather. If you use wood as fuel, you will end up with charcoal, which you can also use to make gunpowder.
Another option is to make the gasoline from gas (Aberration DLC). For this, you need:
- 20x Ball of Frozen Gas
- 20x Green Gem or Shattered Green Gem
You can now process the “ingredients” into gasoline on a chemistry bench.
For this, you need Gasoline in ARK: Survival Evolved
Later in the game, you will unlock higher technologies, for which you also need modern means of propulsion. Gasoline is one of these means of propulsion and is used for various devices, including chainsaws, industrial forges, and motorboats.
You need petrol to operate the following devices:
- Fabricator
- Electric Generator
- Industrial Grill
- Chemical Bank
- Industrial Forge
- Motorboat
- Industrial Grinder
- Motor Mount for the zip line
- Chainsaw
- Mining Drill
