"The Adamantite Forge" is the name of a story quest in Baldur's Gate 3. Our role-playing expert, Alex, shows you how to activate the ancient forge and defeat its guardian, Grym.
In this guide, you'll learn:
In Baldur's Gate 3, during the first act, you receive a quest named "The Adamantite Forge." As part of this quest, you are tasked with locating and activating the underground forge. However, the entrance is blocked by a lot of debris and rubble, and for good reason.
This location in Baldur's Gate 3 allows the creation of legendary items, provided you have the required ore. These can include special staffs, medium armor, or extremely rare armor pieces with multiple useful buffs. It's best to embark on this journey with your companions. But where exactly do you need to go?
To reach the legendary forge, first, travel with your party to the Underdark; this journey is, of course, part of the story. Your point of interest is the southwest bottom corner of the map. Refer to the screenshot below for clarity.
With the help of the next screenshot and by noting the position on the minimap in the upper right corner, you can quickly locate the correct vessel for the crossing. Once your group has boarded the depicted boat, you don't need to do anything else; the journey begins automatically.
The location where you land is named after the Adamantite Forge, but you're not quite there yet. Refer to the lower image to see the exact location of your destination, once again within the green marker.
To gain access to the forge, you need to clear a passageway blocked by debris. The exact coordinates of this spot are X: -672 Y: 443. After this, you'll be standing in the scorching hot environment of the ancient site and can proceed with its activation. However, there's one more thing to do.
While traversing the ancient workplace, keep the ALT key pressed on your PC to highlight interactive objects in the environment. To ignite the forge, you need two things: forge forms and Mithral ore.
Three forms should be scattered throughout the area (also available as loot from skeletons on the ground), while Mithral ore is more abundant. You can easily recognize the essential resource without using the ALT key: they are large, blue-glowing stones. Two of them are definitely on the lower level of the Adamantite Forge.
To activate the Adamantite Forge, follow the path upward (all paths here are relatively straightforward) until you find two levers in the south of the area. The trick to activation is that the group must act partly independently. Teamwork is crucial in this part of the quest.
Leave one of your companions at the levers and move the rest of the group northward. With them, you need to horizontally cross a hanging bridge, which is not a problem thanks to jump or teleportation abilities. Then, jump onto the second bridge behind it and stand there.
Now switch to the character left at the levers to move the bridge using the levers. This way, the other group members reach a normally inaccessible area where the waypoint "Underdark – Ancient Fortress" is automatically activated. You can use this to teleport the lever operator back to the group. From here, a path leads down to the Adamantite Forge, with exact coordinates X: -569 Y: 252.
To use the Adamantite Forge, you can switch between two different levels: the high level and the low level. To pour magma, you need to select the upper level.
Now, it's time to place a mold in the chamber and Mithral ore into the central crucible (see the green marker in the image below). When you pull the forge lever (consider the character's location above the marker), the forge starts working and is brought down to the lower level.
Regarding crafting items with the Adamantite Forge, that's it. However, when you first use the forge as part of the quest, you encounter a mentioned problem: Grym, the guardian, appears to give you and your party a tough time.
To be precise, the fiery boss Grym makes his entrance right after you open the lava valve of the forge. Unlike many other boss monsters in Baldur's Gate 3, Grym has resistances to virtually all damage types, making a conventional fight against him not feasible, or at least not advisable.
Instead, you should use Grym's beloved forge to deal damage to the troublemaker.
You're fortunate if you positioned one of your party members at the lever for the lava valve before Grym appears. You, with the other group members, follow a bait strategy: try to lure the attacking guard repeatedly into the center of the forge.
By pulling the lever, you can metaphorically slam him into the ground using the crucible. Repeat this game until Grym is neutralized. This is the easiest way to beat the steam-snorting boss.
