Some PC Starfield players choose to use a controller/gamepad to play, and have run into the issue of it not working. If you’re one of these players, you’ve come to the right place as in this guide, we’ll teach you how to fix Starfield controller not working.
Starfield has features that may be more convenient with a controller, e.g. starship navigation, and some even say Starfield is best enjoyed with it, so it’s quite frustrating to find your controller not working. But, there are quite a few simple solutions to this problem. Follow the instructions below to get your controller working again.
How to Fix PC Starfield Controller not Working
We’ve made a list of fixes you can try to solve this issue:
- The first, old-fashioned way to try is to restart your PC and/or reconnect your controller. Try this if you haven’t already. If this doesn’t work, though, do not worry, as there are a few more ways to fix this issue.
- The thing causing controller problems may just be having too many controllers connected. Try disconnecting all the controllers except the one you’re using and see if it works after restarting your game.
- If you’re using Steam to run the game, disabling Steam Input may be a suitable option. Oddly enough, this built-in feature on Steam may be messing with using your controller. To disable it, do the following:
- Go to your Steam app, then your library, and find Starfield.
- Right-click on it and open Properties.
- Once you’re in Properties, look on the left side of the page to find the Controller option.
- In the Controller settings for Starfield, you will find the drop-down menu to disable Steam Input. Steam Input works weird, so if you already had it disabled, try enabling it and launch the game.

- Another solution for Steam users is checking if your controller is connected properly. Open the Settings in the Steam app, look for the Controller settings tab on the left side of the page, and open General Controller Settings. Here, you should see if your controller is connected at the top of the page, as it automatically detects any gamepads/controllers that have been connected. If you cannot see your controller there, try reconnecting it.
- There may be an issue with your controller or USB port. Try using your controller with other games, and if it doesn’t work, reconnect your controller to another USB port and if you’re using a wireless one, you might need a new controller.
- A different method to try is to use a wired controller if you still have one. This will work every time as there are no software connectivity issues. Alternatively, if you don’t have a wired controller, you can connect your wireless controller via USB and it should connect automatically.
