With the “Rise of the Angry Earth” expansion, New World introduces mounts for the first time. Discover how to secure your first mount, level it up, the variety of mounts on offer, and additional features to anticipate.
Here's what's going on: On October 3, 2023, Amazon's MMORPG New World unveiled its first paid expansion, “Rise of the Angry Earth”. Meeting avid fan expectations, this expansion integrates mounts into the gameplay. We've embarked on the mount journey, ready to share insights on horses, wolves, and lions.
What you'll learn from our guide:
To access and utilize mounts in Amazon's New World MMORPG, you'll need to acquire the “Rise of the Angry Earth” expansion pack. This expansion is available on Steam for $28.99, offering a fresh region, novel adversaries, dungeons, gear, and, notably, the mounts.
In addition to the expansion, your character must attain level 25 to initiate the first quest “A Kingdom for a Horse” in northern Everfall.
Upon owning the Rise of the Angry Earth expansion and reaching character level 25, you'll notice a new golden horseshoe icon on your map. To embark on the “A Kingdom for a Horse” quest, head to the northern part of Everfall, adjacent to the southern boundary of Lightwood. Conveniently, you'll also locate a fast-travel point nearby, ensuring a shorter journey.
Upon reaching the destination, you'll speak with the Horse Whisperer Jochi Khan, who will give you the quest. You should now head to the lake in the east and search for traces of the Beast Lord in a cave. To do this, simply enter the cave marked on your map and interact with two wall paintings before being sent out to befriend a horse.
If you now return to Jochi, you will not only receive the ability to ride, but with Moonshadow, you'll also get your first horse. In addition, you'll receive 500 rider experience points because you can also level up your riding skill. To use your horse now, you need to open your inventory (Tab) and equip your horse with a simple click. Afterward, you can summon it with X.
After you've completed the first quest from Jochi, he will tell you how to feed your horse. For this, you'll receive the quest “Hungry as a Horse” and be given some basic ingredients. You are then tasked with cooking the new recipe at your camp or by the campfire next to Jochi.
How to prepare the mount vittles: To cook the mount vittles for the quest, you will need the following ingredients:
You will also receive the recipe for basic mount feed. You don't need it for the quest at this moment, but you can use it to feed your horse. To make it, you will need:
Once you've prepared the mount feed, you have to assign it to your quick slots via your menu (Tab). After that, summon your horse and press the corresponding quick slot button to feed your horse.
Why feed the horse? Feeding your horse, outside of the quest, is purely optional. Your horse won't starve if you don't feed it regularly. However, the advantage of feeding is that you gain experience points for your riding skill, allowing you to reach the maximum level of 250 more quickly. You should always choose the best possible feed since you can only feed your horse 3 times a day.
For instance, the mount feed gives you 2,500 experience points, while the basic mount feed provides 1,250 EXP.
You've already learned that feeding provides good experience points for your riding skill. This action is limited to 3 times a day, but there are other ways to level up your mounts. First and foremost, you should continue the quest from Jochi, who sends you to your first “race.”
The “Hermit Rally” is quite straightforward; you cross the starting line and follow various checkpoints until you cross the finish line. A timer runs down, which is reset to a specific time – often 35 or 45 seconds, at each checkpoint. You should always travel on the roads to get a speed boost. However, at a few points, taking a shortcut through the wilderness is beneficial. Overall, the time is quite generous, and you should easily complete the race – just remember to use the sprint function with the Shift key.
Once you've completed the rally, 5 more races will unlock in Everfall and Lightwood that you can participate in. Some of them are standard checkpoint races, while others require you to reach a specific destination within a limited time.
Once you've completed all the races, your riding skill should be around level 90, unlocking your first bonuses such as increased speed and horse equipment.
From level 1 to 250, every 10 levels, you unlock bonuses or items intended for your mount. Mount attachments can be attached to the left and right side of your mount and are purely for aesthetic purposes. Horseshoes, talismans, amulets, and bracelets can be placed in 2 equipment slots of your mount, providing minor bonuses.

The appearance of your mount can be changed not only with new skins but also through the aforementioned items. However, skins play the most significant role here, as your mounts can not only change their color but also receive cool armor. With the aforementioned items, you can only change a few details that are attached to your mount. Individual components, such as the saddle, can also be dyed.
While most of your mount's skins are available in the in-game shop for 15,000 to 25,000 lucky marks, equivalent to €10 to €25, you can also buy skins with gold (coins) from Mount Whisperers like Jochi. Here, the skin costs 10,000 coins. Additionally, in the shop, you can also purchase mount accessories for 3,000 lucky marks each, which you can attach to your mount. As of the current date (05.10.23), you can have 9 horses, 9 gray wolves, and 10 lions, specifically their skins, in your possession.
When you open your inventory, you can now switch to the “Mount” tab at the top. Here, you can not only see which mount you currently have equipped but also which items are attached. Your mounts provide a total of 4 slots to equip various items. While horseshoes and talismans offer real advantages, such as a more efficient sprint, the other two slots are purely cosmetic. This way, you can attach items like an iron shield or a sack to your mount's hip and further customize its appearance.
When you open your character menu with the K key, you can select the “Mount” tab at the top of the screen. Here, you have a list of all the mounts you own. By left-clicking on a mount of your choice, you get the option to equip it, rename it, or color it. When you click “rename”, you can choose and save a new name.
Clicking on “Dye Armor” opens a preview of your horse, and you can change the primary, secondary, accent, and shade colors of your horse's armor. If your horse doesn't have armor, you can only adjust the color of the saddle.
While you can buy additional skins for all mount types in the shop, besides the horse, you unlock two more mounts through quests. After the horse comes the wolf, followed later by the lion.
You receive the respective quests to unlock the wolf or the lion whenever you complete the previous quest series. So, once you've finished all the races with your horse, the quest series for the wolf follows. After completing that, you get the quest series for the lion. Here's the recommended criteria:
You can start the quests earlier and try your luck. While in each quest series, for instance, you have to complete rallies where your level technically doesn't matter, you also have to complete quests where you fight against the enemies in the area. So, you should definitely reach the recommended level before facing these challenges.
