With Sons of the Forest, one of the most anticipated games finally appeared on Steam on February 23, 2023. But the survival horror title is not running smoothly everywhere at launch: Some fans complain about crashes and problems loading the game, among other things.
What’s going on? You were really looking forward to Sons of the Forest, but now you can’t play because the game crashes in the loading screen? We have collected a few solutions in our guide, which should allow you a smooth entry into the merciless world of the survival title.
Sons of the Forest: Fix Crash Problems
Fans sometimes report that they cannot start the game because it already crashes in the loading screen. The writing fills with color for a bit before the screen freezes and a crash message flickers across the screen shortly after – or nothing happens at all.
How can I make my game stop crashing? If you are affected by this error, you can try the following solutions:
- Quit other running programs. Especially web browsers like Google Chrome or Firefox can cause the memory to be used up and not enough RAM is available.
- Check the game files of Sons of the Forest for errors (right-click on game name in Steam library → Properties → Local Files → Check Game Files for Errors).
- Make sure you have the latest graphics card drivers installed.
- In case you are using an Nvidia graphics card: Check if your GPU is set as the primary graphics card in the system settings (right-click on the desktop → NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings → Global Preferences → 3D App – Game Development + Preferred Graphics Processor → NVIDIA High Performance Processor + 3D Settings → Set PhysX Configuration → Select a PhysX Processor → your graphics card).
If you have followed all these steps, the game should start without any problems. In most cases, however, simply checking the game files for errors will be enough to fix the loading screen crash.
