You can get the crossbow near the shotgun, also to the northwest of the mountain, though not quite as high up. Additionally, you need the red keycard for the crossbow. The crossbow is hidden in a laboratory, which you can only access with the Maintenance card. Go to the marked spot on the map to find the entrance to the cave that leads you into the laboratory.
Once you've squeezed through the narrow opening into the cave, you simply need to follow the passage deeper underground until you come across a ladder that leads down. Climb down, and you'll arrive in a room with the locked laboratory door.
Use the keycard, and you'll enter a room with several shelves filled with plants. Behind it, there's another plant room, in which a corpse lies on the floor among the shelves. That's where you'll also find the crossbow.
Of course, collecting the crossbow is not a walk in the park. Several enemies lurk in the plant rooms, blocking your way to the loot. It's best to take them out with a few Molotov cocktails to clear the way.
As mentioned, the crossbow is not one of the absolute top weapons in Sons of the Forest. However, that does not mean it should be ranked among the bad weapons. Even if the pistol and shotgun perform better in direct comparison, the crossbow convinces with high penetration power and solid damage. The biggest disadvantage is the long reload time. However, it is relatively easy to obtain and is not excessively guarded.
