In Starfield you have to open a safe in the research lab on Kreet and then take care of the captain of the Crimson Fleet. This guide shows you how to find digipicks on the spot and crack the safe.
Here’s the problem: In Starfield, the main mission “One Small Step” takes you to a research lab on the moon Kreet. There you’re supposed to disarm the captain of the Crimson fleet, but you might run into a problem before that – namely, opening a certain safe.
The trouble is that Vasco wants to evaluate the contents of the safe, so you’ll be forced to crack the thing. What’s more, only a few of the digipicks you found seem to fit into the lock. But that’s no longer a problem, because this guide will help you quickly open the safe in the research lab on Kreet.
Starfield: How to Unlock the Safe in the Research Lab on Kreet
On your way to the research lab safe, you’ve probably already shot your way out. That’s good, because dead bodies are exactly what you need to crack the safe. No, it’s not their fingernails you’ll use to unlock the lock, but the digipicks that some deceased people have in their pockets.

The first digipick (or the last one, as the case may be) can be found at the deceased right next to the safe (see picture above). In addition, you should turn to the scientist corpses in the vicinity for digipicks, but pirates might also carry one or the other lockpick. Note that not every dead scientist is easy to spot in the dusty darkness; check out the screenshots below.
Once you have four or five digipicks, you can go to the vault in question and try your luck. In the absence of a tutorial, you may be under the impression that you have to find the digipicks that fit exactly into each row of the lock, but that’s not the case.
Rather, the digipicks can be rotated around so that the individual keys can be moved directly to the matching vacancies in the lock (see image below). On the PC, you do this using the A and D keys.

If the currently selected digipick still does not fit, simply change the lockpick in the small window to the right of the lock. One of the found picks fits in any case on one of the lock rows (see also here the picture below).
And that was already the whole “trick”. After you open the safe, the corresponding subtask gets a green tick and you can make your way to the captain of the Crimson Fleet.
