In Starfield, companions are designed to assist space captains in exploring the universe and engaging in battles. We're introducing all available NPC allies in detail, revealing their skills.
Everything about companions (TLDR):
Companions in Starfield ensure you don't succumb to loneliness while exploring the vast game universe. Plus, they significantly support you in combat against the many threats of the fictional future world.
Altogether, the space RPG includes ten companions, one of whom, Sam Coe's daughter, serves more as chatty scenery. As a child, she naturally stays on your ship. The mix of companions offers something for everyone: from a resilient leader to a stranded miner and an expedition robot. But see for yourself.
The Adoring Fan in Starfield is pretty much the worst thing that could happen to you in Bethesda's RPG. And if you've played The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006), you might already have an idea of what to expect.
Yes, this Adoring Fan is essentially a relentless reincarnation of that egg-yellow-haired annoyance who tested your patience outside the Imperial Arena. Or at least, that's the type of character we're dealing with here.
To encounter this embodiment of a reason for self-sabotage, you need to select the "Hero Worshipper" trait in the game. The upside is getting a crew member early on; the downside, well, is the member himself. His job, as usual, is to flatter you and follow you everywhere.
As annoying as the Adoring Fan may be, he actually offers a few benefits. He can travel on your ship and fight by your side, regularly gifts you small presents, and can even carry your luggage through the wilderness upon request. The Adoring Fan was voiced by the same person who voiced him back in Oblivion in 2006.
Andreja, belonging to House Va'ruun, is not one of the religious fanatics. On the contrary, she's a character of integrity, somewhat resembling Sarah Morgan, the leader of the Constellation.
Andreja is driven by her mentor's betrayal. During her personal quest, you help confront the villain. Andreja stands out from other companions by gifting you exclusively credits, rather than valuables or resources.
Barrett is a captivating character and one of the first NPCs you'll encounter in Starfield. The scientist and explorer will cross your path shortly after the game begins, following your discovery of a particular artifact in the mines. He greets you with: "You dug up the artifact, right? That means you've seen them, the visions?"
Barrett is essentially a jack-of-all-trades among your companions. He can improve existing food recipes, increase damage against robots, and enhance weapons and your ship's designs.
Cora is the daughter of potential companion Sam Coe mentioned earlier. She's a very bright child who loves reading books. She claims to be able to fix broken spaceship parts, indicating a lost technical genius.
Cora isn't a companion in the traditional sense, as she neither wields a weapon nor accompanies you anywhere. She always stays on your ship, often seeking conversations with her father Coe. If you're looking for more life aboard your ship, assign Sam Coe as a crew member.
Heller is one of the first NPCs you'll meet in Starfield, alongside Barrett. His equipment suggests he works as a miner, but Heller doesn't appear in the mine where the artifact is discovered at the game's start.
Instead, Heller crash-lands on a deserted planet. This situation is why your potential companion is knowledgeable about outpost technology, as he had to survive until his discovery.
As your former supervisor at Argos Extractors, Lin is a tough woman. Additionally, she's a veteran of the Colonial War, having fought as a soldier for the UC for over a year. You meet Lin at the beginning of Starfield, which features a pirate attack on the Argos mining outpost on Vectera.
However, Lin isn't immediately recruitable. Only during the main mission "Back to Vectera" does she become available as a companion. Interestingly, your ex-boss's strengths aren't so much in combat, although she will stand by your side with a weapon if desired. She's actually best suited for managing outposts.
At spaceports like The Viewport in New Atlantis, it's always possible to hire additional crew members. A potential recruit is Marika Boros, whose skills clearly indicate a role as a weapons officer. The NPC introduces herself with, "Do you have room on your ship for someone like me?"
Besides her crew skills, Marika also serves as an extra hand in combat; just don't get too close, as romance with her is not an option. And if that doesn't break the hearts of some space wanderers...
Sam Coe was formerly a member of the Freestar Collective but has left his space cowboy days behind to join Constellation. Sam is one of the few NPC companions who are "up for anything."
Sam can join your crew, accompany you on your adventures as a companion, and even serve as a romantic partner ("I don't know if I've ever truly loved anyone... except you."). Clearly, Sam is a skilled pilot and specializes in long-range combat.
While most others are merely members of a faction, Sarah Morgan leads Constellation. A former soldier and adventurer, Sarah is particularly interested in the search for artifacts scattered throughout the colonized systems.
She's quite determined in her quest, stating during an artifact search, "We will travel together until we either find an artifact or its trail goes cold."
As a former soldier, Sarah is still proficient with laser guns, as indicated by her high ranking in that category. It goes without saying that as the leader of a faction, she also possesses advanced leadership skills.
Vasco is a modified expedition robot, originally built by Lunar Robotics. This bot has been significantly upgraded from the original model to better meet the needs of the Constellation faction.
Although primarily designed for exploration, Vasco can defend himself if necessary. Moreover, as a "useful heavy-duty machine," he can thrive in hostile environments.
