The companions of Starfield are supposed to help space captains explore the universe and fight. We present all known NPC companions in detail and reveal their skills.
Here’s the deal: In Starfield, companions are supposed to make sure that you don’t fall into a lonely depression while exploring the huge game universe. And: Companions will support you in the fight against the many threats of the fictional future world.
Now the release of the open-world role-playing game on September 6, 2023 is not far off and details about the companions are already known. In this article you’ll learn everything Bethesda has revealed about the potential crew members and companions of Starfield.
These are the Companions of Starfield
So far, a total of seven companions have been more or less described. From the information, a colorful picture emerges, because from the stubborn leader to a stranded miner to an expedition robot, there is a lot here. But see for yourself:
Adoring Fan (Starfield Companion)
Faction: –
Crewmember: Yes
Companion: Unknown
Romanceable: Unknown
Adoring Fans Skills:
- Lifting Weights: Rank 2. And that’s a good thing, because if that yolk-blonde burr is already slobbering all over you 24/7, at least she can carry your luggage in return.
- Loot: Rank 1. This probably doesn’t significantly increase the amount of loot that can be found in containers or from fallen enemies. But at least the guy carries your stuff.
- Concealment: Rank 1. This skill has not yet been introduced or demonstrated. From experience, it could be the equivalent of stealth (sneaking, etc.). Well, in any case, your faithful henchman is hauling your luggage.
Adoring Fan of Starfield is, as things stand, the worst thing that can happen to you in the space role-playing game. And if you have played The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (2006), then you already know exactly what is meant by it.
Because yes, the Adoring Fan is basically the same egg-yolk blonde pain in the ass that stretched your patience in front of the Imperial Arena back in the day. Or at least the guy is a completely merciless reincarnation.
To counter this man-made suicide reason, you’ll have to select the Hero Worshipper trait in the game. The upside is that this way you get a crew member early on; the downside is, well, the member himself. His job, as usual, is to butter you up and follow you wherever you go.
But as annoying as the Adoring Fan can be, he actually offers a few advantages. For example, he can travel aboard your ship and fight by your side, he gives you small gifts at regular intervals, and he can even carry your luggage through the pampas if you wish. By the way, the Adoring Fan was dubbed by exactly the same person who spoke the Adoring Fan in Olivion in 2006.
Currently it is not yet known whether a romance with the Adoring Fan can be started. But who would want such a thing anyway?
Where to find the Adoring Fan:
- Location: New Atlantis
- Planet: Jemison
- System: Alpha Centauri
Barrett (Starfield Companion)
Faction: Constellation
Crewmember: Yes
Companion: Yes
Romance: Unknown
Barrett’s Skills:
- Starship Engineering: rank 4. Many skills are undescribed to date. Possible that Barrett is skilled in starship repairs.
- Particle Beam Weapons: Rank 3.
- Robotics: Rank 2. Many skills are still undescribed. It remains to be seen if this companion is skilled in building or “only” repairing robots.
- Gastronomy: Rank 1. many abilities are still undescribed. Let’s hope that this trait won’t be limited to improving food, because who wouldn’t want to run an intergalactic restaurant?
Barrett is considered an absorbing character and is one of the first NPCs you’ll meet in Starfield. The scientist and explorer will cross your path shortly after the opening of the role-playing game, after you discover a certain artifact in the mines. He will greet you by saying, “You dug up the artifact, right? That means you saw it, the visions?”
So far, it looks like Barrett is the all-rounder among your companions. He has the ability to improve existing food recipes, increases damage against robots, and improves weapons as well as designs of your ship. Nothing can be said about his faction, Constellation, at the moment.
Where to find Barrett:
- Event: After repelling an attack from the Crimson fleet and finding a strange artifact in the mines.
- Planet: –
- System: Probably Alpha Centauri, since Barrett apparently recruits you for Constellation and invites you to New Atlantis.
Heller (Starfield Companion)
Faction: –
Crewmember: Yes
Companion: No
Romance: No
Heller’s Skills:
- Outpost tech rank 3. Many skills are undescribed to date. However, it stands to reason that Heller could be your man for managing (d)an outpost.
- Geology: Rank 1. Many skills are as yet undescribed and the effect of this trait is currently obscure.
Besides Barrett, Heller could be one of the first NPCs you’ll meet in Starfield. His equipment and the scenes shown so far suggest that he works as a miner, but Heller is unlikely to appear in the mine where the artifact is recovered at the beginning of the game.
Because one thing is already known about Heller, and that is that he made a proper crash landing on an abandoned planet. Your potential partner owes his knowledge of outpost technology to this circumstance, because somehow he had to get by until his discovery.
It is likely that the meeting with Heller will not take too long, perhaps it will happen already during the first main mission. By the way, a romance with Heller will not be possible.
Where to find Heller:
- Location: –
- Planet: –
- System: Probably Alpha Centauri
Marika Boros (Starfield Companion)
Faction: –
Crewmember: Yes
Companion: No
Romance: No
Marika’s Skills:
- Ballistics: Rank 2
- Shotguns: Rank 1
- Particle Beam Weapons: Rank 1
At spaceports like The Viewport, it is always possible to recruit additional crew members. One potential recruit is Marika Boros, whose skills suggest she could be a weapons officer. Marika could also assist her spaceship captain as a trigger-happy gunner.
In the recruitment scene in The Viewport already shown by Bethesda, the NPC lady introduces herself with the words “Do you have room on your ship for someone like me?”. Marika, by the way, as a mere crew member, doesn’t have the same abilities as your permanent companions.
Still, she should be useful as an extra weapon arm, if nothing else. Yes, that’s right – romance with Marika won’t be possible. And if this circumstance won’t break many a globetrotter’s heart …
Where to find Marika Boros:
- Location: The Viewport
- Planet: –
- System: –
Sam Coe (Starfield Companion)
Faction: Constellation
Crewmember: Yes
Companion: Yes
Romance: Yes
Sam Coe’s Skills:
- Pilot: Rank 4. Many skills are undescribed to date. However, as a former space cowboy, Sam should know damn well how to maneuver a plane.
- Guns: Rank 3
- Explosive Charges: Rank 2
- Geology: Rank 2. Many abilities are as yet undescribed and the effect of this trait is currently obscure.
Sam Coe was formerly a member of the Freestar Collective, but has left his space cowboy days behind and joined the Constellation faction. Sam is one of the few NPC companions known to date who will “do anything with you.”
So Sam can join your crew, accompany you as a companion on your adventures, and even stick by you as a relationship partner (“I don’t know if I’ve ever really loved anyone … Except you.”). Sam Coe is obviously a skilled pilot, and by all appearances he specializes in ranged combat.
Where to find Sam Coe:
- Location: Akila City
- Planet: Akila
- System: Cheyenne
Sarah Morgan (Starfield Companion)
Faction: Constellation
Crewmember: Yes
Companion: Yes
Romance: Yes
Sarah’s Abilities:
- Astrodynamics: Rank 4. Many abilities are undescribed to date and the effect of this trait is currently in the dark.
- Botany: Rank 1. Many skills are undescribed to date and the effect of this trait is currently in the dark.
- Laser: Rank 3
- Leadership: Rank 2
While most others are just members of a faction, Sarah Morgan is the leader of Constellation. As a former soldier and adventurer, Sarah is particularly interested in the search for artifacts scattered throughout the populated systems.
And she’s apparently a very persistent character in this matter, because in the context of an as-yet-unknown artifact search, Sarah says, “We’ll travel together until we either find an artifact or its trail is lost.”
Of course, as an ex-soldier, Sarah can still handle laser guns, as can be seen from her good third category rank. It should also go without saying that she has developed leadership qualities as the leader of a faction.
Where to find Sarah Morgan:
- Location: New Atlantis, Constellation Headquarters
- Planet: Jemison
- System: Alpha Centauri
Vasco (Starfield Companion)
Faction: Constellation
Crewmember: Yes
Companion: Yes
Romance: Unknown
Vasco’s Abilities:
None known at this time.
Vasco is a modified expeditionary robot, originally built by Lunar Robotics (a company about which nothing more is known yet). This bot has been significantly improved over the original model to better meet the needs of the Constellation faction. Although Vasco’s main purpose is, of course, exploration, the not entirely scary-looking robot can also defend itself if need be.
According to the information and images so far, Vasco can hold its own as a “useful, heavy industrial machine” even in hostile environments. However, it remains to be seen whether the machine companion will also be able to tackle spaceship repairs – as seen in concept drawings.
Where to find Vasco:
- Location: –
- Planet: –
- System: –
