The end of The Walking Dead will divide fans, but one scene should make everyone happy: The return of Rick Grimes and Michonne, but their future doesn't look rosy. In this article, we explain the end of The Walking Dead and give an outlook on the future.
What's it about? The Walking Dead is officially over and the final episode 11x24 has flickered across home screens. And we finally got a glimpse of returnee Rick Grimes and Michonne. This glimpse, however, is grim. The ending reveals the following:
It's over and done with, and we're not getting a satisfying answer to every question. Left unexplained is how Maggie and Negan get to New York and Daryl gets to France - if at all. However, we finally know more about Rick Grimes, Michonne and Carol as well. Their fate ends differently than many probably expected. But let's get started!
After the actual fade-out, scenes with Rick Grimes and Michone followed. First, they spoke off-screen. Then we jump to a dirty and taken Rick Grimes wearing a CRM jacket on the beach. Through the first movie trailer, fans suspected that Rick was in Philadelphia. And indeed, we see Rick on the run from the CRM, but that's as far as Rick has gotten beyond the outskirts of Philadelphia. The CRM catches up to him with the one helicopter and captures him again. As the helicopter comes in for a landing, we see a relieved laugh spring from Rick's desperate expression. Is he going to be rescued here after all?
So Rick Grimes has been held captive in Philadelphia for 10 years. This is also the reason why he could never get back to his family. Being a B is probably less good than being an A, we have explained the difference here: TWD: World Beyond solves the meaning of A & B as well as Rick's fate
In the final scene of The Walking Dead, we also briefly accompany Michonne, who rides in new leather armor on the back of a horse. However, she no longer seems to be traveling with the giant group from season 10. Instead, in one scene, she rides alone toward a herd of walkers. So much for what was shown, but has she found Rick yet?
No, Michonne is still in search of Rick Grimes after 2 years. She speaks during her scene to Judith and her brother R.J. She promises to find Rick and reunite the family.
Daryl and the others learn from Judith at the beginning of the episode that Rick is still alive. However, no one really wants to react to this. Even after the end and another time jump of one year, we learn that Daryl didn't go looking for Rick. Only at the very end, he decides to go alone. Carol doesn't come along. So there doesn't seem to be a Carol and Daryl spin-off coming up, just a Daryl spinoff. Moreover, that's supposed to actually send him to France. Again, that would have to mean that Rick and Michonne end up there as well -- very confusing.
What we find sad at this point is that no one really cares that Rick is still alive, neither Maggie, Negan, Carol, Eugene or any of the others say a word about it.
