DayZ on console is receiving an update in the form of a new Chernarus map. You will be getting DayZ Expansion, one of the biggest mod packages for the survival game. We'll tell you everything you need to know.
What's it about? Console players have it tough: no mods, only two maps, and a handful of weapons. When you have a controller in your hand, you're simply dependent on developer content or committing a crime against humanity by using a controller on PC. However, this content drought is changing as more and more mods are becoming available for the console version of DayZ. Today, we're showing you a remastered version of Chernarus from the Expansion mod package.
So far, the modification for DayZ only contains an adapted version of the Chernarus map. However, it's hardly recognizable compared to the familiar Chernarus+. Expansion-Chernarus offers the following features:
Overall, the world of Expansion-Chernarus feels like a genuine post-apocalypse. The reason the previous Chernarus couldn't fully capture this atmosphere lies simply in hardware requirements. More 3D assets also mean a heavier load on the system. Consider the long traffic jams everywhere in the game world, indicating people were trying to flee. Cool loot spots, cool storytelling through the environment, but uncool for performance.
The abundance of grass, trees, and bushes also leads to significant FPS drops. However, this makes the world feel more realistic and gives the impression that in DayZ, not just a few months, but even several years or decades have passed since the outbreak of the virus.
Yet, even the PC version of the Expansion map caused summer temperatures in gaming rooms during winter. That's one reason why the Expansion map is unfortunately hardly found on servers anymore. So, the first thought is clear: "If it doesn't run well on PC, how will it perform on console?" This is where the console version of the Expansion mod has a classic advantage: optimization.
DayZ server owners have the option to adjust individual areas and buildings almost at the press of a button using multiple files. If all the files are simply enabled, the performance on PlayStation or Xbox will suffer. However, if a server owner only enables certain parts of Expansion-Chernarus, they can optimize the hardware load.
There are separate files for exterior and interior areas of each major city. If desired, you can leave Chernogorsk unchanged but transform the school in the northwest of the city into an overrun quarantine camp. Alternatively, you can adjust only the hotspots on the map — all done quickly and easily through copy and paste.
The following files can be combined as desired:
