The survival MMO Rust has received a new update on July 7, 2022. This update further improves the "Combat Balance", brings many Quality of Life improvements and expands the map Hapis Island with 3 new areas. Also, the loading times have been improved, now you should be able to connect to a server faster.

What it's about:  The developer Facepunch has announced the changes for the July update, special focus is probably mainly on the further changes of weapons and balancing of combat situations. Additionally there are many QoL improvements for players and server admins.

The weapon and combat adjustments in the Rust July Update

First the firing time of the F1 Grenade has been adjusted, by reducing it by 0.5 seconds to now 2.5 seconds firing time it should no longer be as easy to dodge the grenade, also the M39 has been heavily modified to feel like a better variant of the SAR, the rate of fire has been increased and the recoil changed. Also, the use of shotgun slugs is supposed to work better now, as they don't lose as much damage when firing at further range, thus they are supposed to be deadly at medium range as well. Additionally, the following points have been adjusted:

  • The option to hide blood has been improved
  • An option to turn off visual feedback on damage has been added
  • The blood and blur effects have been reduced
  • M249 is now more aggressive (probably more damage?)
  • HMLMG gets more recoil
  • HMLMG loses durability faster
  • HMLMG costs more to produce
  • Silencers no longer give a bonus to accuracy
  • Using scopes increases recoil

The Quality of Life improvements Rust, July update

For the player, besides the reduced loading time to connect to servers, many other QoL improvements have been added. For example, you now have a crosshair when using spray cans, you can mute players in the contacts menu and throw photos into mailboxes. Also, the idle animation in the inventory has been improved and when using the jackhammer you always hit the hotspot even without tap-firing. Items like the mailbox, middle battery, windmill, and BBQ now point towards the player when building.

For server owners, there is now an area in the admin panel where you can view all player-created content such as signs, cassettes, pumpkins, neon signs, and "pattern boomers" at a glance and delete them if necessary. In addition, this panel can also be used to filter for the works of certain players, in case this player has already attracted negative attention before. There is also an improved version of the reporting tool that makes it easier to report problematic works of other players. The use of the "Steam Chat Filter" has also been added to censor insults and other problematic terms in chat. Also, it is now possible to activate and deactivate Harmony mods via runtime, thus not always having to restart the server.

Camera settings for photographers

New commands have been added for the Debug Camera, allowing it to be set up almost like a real camera. By using the following commands, you can set focal length and sensor, for example.

  • client.camphysical (1/0) - enables or disables the new "physical" settings
  • client.camphysicalsensortypes - Prints camera sensor types with corresponding number
  • client.camphysicalsensor - Select the desired sensor
  • client.camphysicalfocallength - Sets the desired focal length (in mm)
  • client.showcaminfo (1/0) - Enables or disables the camera info overlay

New settings for photographers in Rust!

Hapis news: On the map Hapis Island 3 new areas were added, two of them in the desert and another one in the Arctic. Also, veins of ore, berry bushes and other small bugs were adjusted. For the creative map designers, more assets have been added to make designing a map easier. The assets are simple cubes with different surfaces such as stone, wood or even metal and can be enlarged in all directions to insert walls or floors more easily.
