The Nordic survival hit Valheim has been available for Xbox consoles in Early Access since March 14th. A developer from Iron Gate Studios has now commented on a possible version for Sony's PlayStation.
"But you never know": Valheim's developers are not currently planning to port their 2021 survival whizkid to Sony's PlayStation. That's what Iron Gates senior developer Jonathan Smårs told Luke Lohr on an episode of Xbox Expansion Pass. Literally, the Swede answered Lohr's question about whether there were plans to "launch [Valheims] on other console platforms" with, "Right now we're only looking at Xbox, but you never know."
Smårs further stated that the Valheim team was not directly involved in the Xbox exclusivity decision. Rather, publisher Coffee Stain had negotiated the corresponding deal with Microsoft. Jonathan Smårs' reaction points to a temporary platform commitment, and from an economic point of view, there should be nothing against a later PlayStation release.
Nintendo Switch: Valheim's chunky voxel look and relatively low memory consumption also suggest a release of the title on Nintendo's Switch. For the aforementioned reason, the topic is not up for debate at Iron Gate at the moment, but something is stirring. In an interview with NintendoLife, Panic Button's Head of Production Dan Hernberg expressed great interest in a Switch port. The studio Panic Button is known for high-quality Switch ports; among them are Apex Legends, Doom, Warframe and Wolfenstein.
Mac: Since Valheim is already available in Early Access for Windows and Linux machines, the question may arise whether Iron Gate Studios has also included the Mac in their plans. The developer studio answers this within the FAQ of the official Valheim website: "Compatibility for macOS might follow in the future, but at the moment we don't have a firm timeframe for it."
Valheim became a surprise hit on Steam after its Early Access launch in February 2021. At its peak, the survival title was played by around half a million players at the same time, also 5 million copies were sold within just one month. By April 2022, Valheim had sold more than 10 million times.
