In the Arcane Tower of Baldur's Gate 3, there's a seemingly useless lever located on the top floor. Our role-playing game expert, Alex, reveals its purpose.

In this guide, you'll learn:

  • What the lever in the Arcane Tower does.
  • How to find the secret basement in the Arcane Tower.

The Lever in the Arcane Tower Isn't Part of a Puzzle

The Arcane Tower of Baldur's Gate 3 is a grand mystery.

The lever on the upper floor of Baldur’s Gate 3's Arcane Tower is one of several puzzles at the location. Another puzzle is the floor-level, seemingly broken button, which we've described its purpose here.

Mind you, there's no "real" puzzle associated with the lever in the Arcane Tower. The issue with the lever is that, apart from a metallic stomping sound, it seems to do nothing. However, the lever actually does something; it opens the door to the secret basement of the building.

What the Lever in the Arcane Tower of Baldur's Gate 3 Does

Once you've reactivated the elevator of the Arcane Tower, you can use it to go to any floor of the building. Well, almost any floor - you can't reach the secret basement this way, at least not without some difficulty.

The lever, which is the focus of this guide, is located on the top floor of the Arcane Tower. There, the magical automaton Bernard will approach you, whom you can fight or deceive (and thus "bypass") depending on your response.

Roll First, Then see

The exact location of the lever is to the right of the bookshelf southeast of Bernard's initial location. As soon as you're near the shelf, you automatically roll a perception check. If successful, the lever becomes visible. If you fail, you'll need to try with another team member.

Now, pull the lever if you haven't already, and jump to the ground floor of the Arcane Tower using the elevator. As you'll see, a door has opened near the coordinates X: -48, Y: -293. Go down the stairs there and through the metal door at the end of the stairs, which opens normally.

After pulling the lever on the upper floor of the Arcane Tower, the ground floor has changed: a door has opened.

Find the Secret Basement in the Arcane Tower

Behind the door is the aforementioned secret basement, which you can now thoroughly explore. There's also another way to get there. You need to take and read the book "Paths to Darkness" from one of the many shelves.

Then, you can command Bernard to place the "Leading Light" ring on the table to the right using a verse from the book ("How can I trust? How will I ever know?"). When you equip this ring and step onto the elevator platform, the button for the secret basement suddenly becomes visible.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available for PC via Steam, GOG, and NVIDIA GeForce Now. Also officially released today is the Mac version; the PS5 and Xbox Series versions are still pending.
