Diablo 4 - Selling items or disassembling them, what's the difference?
Whether you should sell items for money or disassemble them for materials depends on your level and equipment. Are you playing a level 50 or higher character and already own legendary armor and weapons? Or are you still at level 10, with an inventory as colorful as a Hundertwasser house? Depending on where on this spectrum you find yourself, you can make your decision:
- When to salvage Items: Players up to level 50 (and until the end of the story) should generally disassemble all items and collect crafting resources. You will need them for engraving and upgrading your items. Items that have a pickaxe icon on them at the blacksmith unlock a transmog when you disassemble them, which you can use to customize your appearance.
- When to sell items: At level 50, you should have a full Legendary gear set. You will hardly need any crafting resources other than herbs for elixirs. Therefore, sell the blue and yellow items. However, you should continue to break down Legendary Item drops for the rare crafting items.

If you see the pickaxe icon, you can unlock new transmogs.
