In Hogwarts Legacy, the quest “Jackdaw’s Rest” will present you with some tough battles. We’ll show you the best combat tactics and tricks against (matriarch) spiders and ancient guardians.
This quest is not easy: In the course of the main story of Hogwarts Legacy, you will meet the ghost of Richard Jackdaw after completing Professor Hecat’s second batch of Expelliarmus spell tasks. Where you’ll meet Jackdaw varies from house to house. For example, if you have joined Ravenclaw, Jack will be waiting in the upper owl tower.
The more or less headless ghost will lead you either way to the Forbidden Forest in the quest “Jackdaw’s Rest”, and there to the place of his death. During his lifetime he had stolen some important book pages, which you have to get back from his corpse.
The problem with this is that, among other things, Richard will take you to a place with possibly high-level enemies. But the following fights are not so easy to win either. So what do you do? It’s simple: relax and have faith in our guide, because with it by your side almost nothing can happen to you.
Smart Tips & Tricks for “Jackdaw’s Rest”
Let’s go: Follow Richard Jackdaw into the Forbidden Forest until he stops at a lighted spot and refuses to accompany you any further. With his location, the scaredy-cat with the renaissance wig suggests that you have to follow the dark forest corridor ahead, but there are high-level spiders of at least level 20 hissing.
Instead, go around the corridor to the right, towards the yellow marked target. However, you can dare to fight those “highs”, because there is a simple trick to defeat them. To do this, attract the spiders from the corridor one by one and “pull” them to the spot at the top of the picture. You are standing there just to the left of Jackdaw.
Now you just use your standard spell to eliminate the spiders. Especially the big matriarch spider can’t hurt you at your location, but if a spider web does come flying (if you’re quick with your shooting, it won’t happen), use Protego to protect yourself from it.
Once you arrive at the marked destination, it’s the entrance to a large dungeon, say the password into the slim well. A fight against some goblins will follow, which you can quickly defeat using the objects standing around. To do this, use the Accio spell to move the objects towards you and then fling them away from you again.
Spiders, Spiders, and Guards
In the dungeon you will only find some simple platform and switch puzzles. You probably already know how to move platforms: Accio is your best friend here as well. You can easily activate these switches, aka door mechanisms, using the Incendio, Leviosa or Accio spells. The only difficult thing with these mechanisms is that one of the three is always somewhat hidden. Take a look at the two screenshots below; there you can see the locations of all door mechanisms.
Got issues with the situation in the first picture? For this we have numbered the mechanisms. You have to activate the “switches” in that order, using Accio, since this spell has a greater range. You’ll just have to run to mechanism #3.
Spiders don’t like cover: To easily get rid of the eight-legged vile in the dungeon, you should always work with smaller “rock walls” as a cover. Again, check out the screenshots below. Most of the time, the spiders won’t attack you at all and will just helplessly waddle from the left to the right while you send them to the eternal web.
The trickiest part is, theoretically, the final fight against the ancient guards. Practically, however, there are some wonderful solutions here as well. In the picture below you can see our character lurking behind a stone pillar to the west of the entrance to the guards’ hall. The first group of guards is marching up from the left. And believe it or not, you can easily shoot them all from this position. Every once in a while a guard might try to get through to you, but then you just cast the levitation spell on him.
But be careful: The next three guards are about twice as big as the previous ones and require a different tactic. With good nerves, you have the option here to alternate the disarm spell Expelliarmus in combination with the standard attack spell.

However, there is a much more elegant solution: the Chinese Chewing Cabbage. You probably already know it from Herbology; it’s a biting and enormously powerful bitch. Throw one or two of them at the feet of the giant guards and then just dodge their blows via dodge roll. That’s it, the cabbages really do all the work for you. And the quest is solved.
