Many things in Sons of the Forest are anything but self-explanatory, for example dropping or transferring items. We therefore explain how you remove items from your inventory, and how you can trade objects with your friends.
Innovative, but also a bit untransparent: Some features of Sons of the Forest are very unusually designed, such as the amazingly graspable mat inventory. With such ideas, Endnight Games produces fresh air on the one hand, but also confusion on the other. Surely you have often wondered how this or that thing exactly works while playing the rough survival trip. We have too.
Among other things, it was not clear to us at first how exactly dropping or trading of items works. That’s why we decided to write this guide, which will tell you everything you need to know about this topic.

Drop and Trade Items in Sons of the Forest
So let’s start with dropping objects from the inventory. One problem here is that the developers didn’t name each button function precisely. For example, the hero doesn’t drop an item by pressing the “drop” button, but merely stows it away. Also, only when your inventory is bursting at the seams does an item fall to the floor.
What you might now comment with a “You’re kdding me, right?” is that the last described procedure is actually the only way to get rid of objects once and for all at the moment. So, in fact, you can’t actively discard a single item. However, this is probably due to the fact that Sons of the Forest is still in Early Access. So the program part for saving the current state of the game world could still be in development. Or in other words: Possibly dropped objects would simply be forgotten at present.
Transferring objects, on the other hand, is definitely possible. So, if you want to give a friend one or more objects from your inventory, you proceed as follows:
- Approach the person you want to give something to until a backpack icon appears over his chest. Now activate it. By default, this is done by holding down the E key (“Interact”).
- Then pull out your inventory mat. Wait until your opponent also brings out his inventory mat.
- Now you can throw the selected object in your inventory at her or him via the left mouse button (“use”), to put it aptly.
