Two weeks before its release, Capcom has dropped a free demo for the role-playing game Dragon's Dogma 2. While the game itself isn't playable in the demo, it includes the complete character creation feature.

  • Starting now, the Dragon's Dogma 2 demo is ready for download on Steam.
  • The included character creator impresses with its extensive customization options.
  • Characters created in this demo can be imported into the full version of the role-playing game once it's released.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Free Demo Available

Steam is now offering a treat for fans of action role-playing games, especially those looking forward to Dragon’s Dogma. Capcom has released a free demo ahead of the much-anticipated sequel, showcasing not the game itself but its quite detailed character creator.

What makes this move special is that players can fully create "the Arisen" (i.e., the game's hero) and their main pawn ahead of the game’s release, with a guarantee that these characters can be imported into the final version of Dragon’s Dogma 2. Additionally, according to Capcom, changes to these main characters can be made in the full game.

What Does the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Character Creator Offer?

We took the liberty of trying out the character creation for this highly anticipated fantasy epic. Based on our experience, this editor is one of the most detailed and comprehensive of its kind.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Character Editor Arisen and Main Pawn
In Dragon's Dogma 2's character creator, players can craft both the Arisen and their main pawn.

In Dragon's Dogma 2's character creator, both the Arisen and their main pawn can be crafted. Using 14 predefined figures or creating a completely new model, the hero and their squire can be customized in numerous ways. The character creation process includes six main categories:

  • Race
  • Body
  • Head (Basic)
  • Detailed Customization
  • Class (Fighter, Archer, Mage, Thief)
  • Voice

These categories are further divided into numerous subcategories, each offering up to 15 parameters for editing individual body parts, such as the nose or mouth. It's hardly surprising that this character editor also offers over 80 colors for facial and body hair, along with several sliders to adjust the gait of the world's saviors.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Character Editor Presets
Judging from the demo, the character editor in Dragon's Dogma 2 might offer a total of 14 preset models.

The character factory only disappoints with the limited selection of hairstyles and character voices. While the menu seems to offer a wide range of voice tones, in the end, there are only a few base voices with different pitch.

"Mostly Positive"

So far, Dragon’s Dogma 2's demo on Steam has been reviewed "mostly positive". Users have little to complain about the character editor itself; one criticism is the minimum height requirement of 1.60 meters, which thwarts creations like "red-haired killer goblins".

Contributing to the slightly marred judgment is Capcom's decision to implement the Enigma copy protection in the RPG sequel. This Denuvo-like technology has previously caused errors even with legally purchased copies of games.

Moreover, it has proven to be intolerant of modifications (mods), which means the modding community might not enjoy this new adventure of the Arisen as much.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is set to release on March 22, 2024, for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Pre-orders are available now, but they do not offer any "special treatment" such as early access to the game.
