The Finals Season 2's trailer pays homage to 8-bit computers, like the C64 released in 1982, and here's what that means for the new map and the season overall.

  • The Finals Season 2 kicks off on March 14, 2024, bringing fresh content to the multiplayer FPS.
  • A new map named "SYS$HORIZON" enters the game, featuring an 8-bit and voxel aesthetic.
  • In the "Power Shift" game mode, teams of five compete to escort a platform across the arena.
  • Additionally, there's a new playstyle (CNS-Hacker) complete with innovative gadgets and a unique specialization.

The Finals Season 2 Content

Rather than just rolling out some new maps and modes, developer Embark Studios wraps the latest content phase for The Finals in a thematic package. Specifically, the new Season 2 map "SYS$HORIZON" is steeped in 8-bit glory, evoking the era of vintage computers that entertained users ages ago with pixelated games like The Great Giana Sisters and Bubble Bobble.

But let's take it one step at a time: The backdrop for the second season involves a hacker collective, namely CNS, hacking into the game show "The Finals." These cybercriminals have gained access to the assets and code of the future.

While the hackers haven't exactly redesigned the map to mimic a 64-kilobyte computer, the references are unmistakable, especially in the sound department. Participants in The Finals will experience an enhanced SID sound that's powerfully nostalgic. Curious? An audiovisual sample can be found just below this paragraph.

Contents of Season 2 of The Finals

Season 2 of The Finals goes beyond its stylish 8-bit flair, set to start on March 14th, bringing a slew of additional updates to the free-to-play first-person shooter. Here's a summary:

  • New "Power Shift" Game Mode: A new mode where teams of five compete to escort a platform across the arena. The platform's movement either halts or completely changes direction when intercepted by an opposing team. Notably, the platform drags along anything in its path and can be thrown off course by physical forces. The mode also allows players to switch characters after each elimination, enabling quick adjustments to team composition and strategy.
  • Additional Playstyle and New Map: The newly introduced map, SYS$HORIZON, immerses you in the role of CNS hackers. Equipped with new gadgets and a fresh specialization, they launch an attack on the game show. This is more of a "fun attack," as it seems these tech wizards just want to have their own (customized) fun. The new special ability can also be combined with existing weapons.
  • As hackers, players "remove walls, defy gravity, burrow through the arena, and transform objects - they become a glitch in the system, the ultimate cyber tactician."
  • Skill-Based League System: This enhanced league system is designed to elevate ranked play, including league rewards. A career system introduces weekly prizes from season sponsors, allowing players to progress from rookie to pro by completing contracts throughout the season.
  • Private Matches: However, these will initially be available in a "feature-limited beta version" only.

New Weapons of The Finals Saison 2

  • Dematerializer for Mediums: This specialized technique temporarily makes solid surfaces like walls, ceilings, or dense matter invisible and penetrable. Players can look through, shoot, and move through these surfaces by creating and closing temporary pathways.
  • Anti-Gravity Cube for Heavys: This device can be placed and alters gravity in its vicinity, lifting participants and objects into the air. Whether it's used to overcome obstacles or for defense is up to the user.
  • Gateway for Lights: A set of two instantly deployable portals with limited range. When both are activated, they allow the transfer of people and items between the locations. The portals are accessible to everyone, but they cannot be seen or shot through, making them perfect for quick escapes in tricky situations.
  • Data Reshaper for Mediums: A device that transforms enemy fortifications or objects into something entirely different, such as turning a mine into a chair or a gun turret into a table. It's an effective way to bypass enemy defenses.
  • All classes receive new weapons, with Lights getting the 93R burst-fire machine pistol, Mediums receiving the new FAMAS burst assault rifle, and Heavys being equipped with the new KS-23 shotgun.

The Finals is available as a free-to-play game for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nvidia GeForce Now (a cloud-streaming service for PC). The second season is set to begin on March 14, 2024.
