Stegosaurus’ little cousin, the Kentrosaurus, has also made it into the world of ARK: Survival Evolved. Even if you can’t ride him, you can tame or breed a herd of them and use them as defenders of your base.
Find out everything you need to know about the herbivore in our Kentrosaurus guide. But also how to catch him, tame him, feed him, and breed offspring too.
This is the Kentrosaurus in ARK: Survival Evolved
Appearance: The Kentrosaurus is often lumped together visually with its larger, more famous relative, the Stegosaurus. The Kentrosaurus is stockier and, above all, spiky. Like the Stegosaurus, it has a double row of plates from the neck to about the base of the tail. In addition, the Kentrosaurus has a double row of spines along its tail, as well as a few spines on its torso that stick out laterally.
Ferocious: The Kentrosaurus ignores and tolerates its ferocious herbivore counterparts, however, it will attack you and your mount directly if you get too close. Being very territorial, closeness means intrusion into that territory. A herd of Kentrosaurus has a larger territory, as the herd bonus/pack bonus increases this. They are also much more aggressive as a result.
Domesticated: Unfortunately, you can’t use a tamed Kentrosaurus as a mount, but a tamed herd of Kentrosaurus can deal serious damage, making it the perfect defense for your base, as it manages to pierce through the thickest armor. In a herd, the Kentrosaurus also gains a pack bonus when tamed, similar to the Allosaurus.
How to tame the Kentrosaurus in ARK
This is how you hunt the Kentrosaurus: Very unspectacular, you take a crossbow or your bow and simply run away from it. In between, you turn around and shoot him. This is possible due to its slow speed, but make sure you keep enough distance, so you don’t get caught by its spikes or get trampled on.
Tip: Attacking and trying to tame a Kentrosaurus when it’s in a herd isn’t a good idea (see Wild Behavior).
How to tame him: Once he’s unconscious, put berries or kibble in his inventory and feed them to tame him. In order to keep the stun value high when taming, it is best to use Narcoberries or the anesthetic.
How to feed a Kentrosaurus in ARK
Once you have tamed your Kentrosaurus, it is important to know what it likes to eat. Kentrosaurus are herbivores, which of course makes the choice of food easier.
- Regular Kibble:
- Ingredients: 1x Medium Egg, 2x Longrass, 2x Savoroot, 1x Cooked Meat Jerky, 5x Fiber, 1x Water
- Ingredients for Cooked Meat Jerky: 1x Cooked Meat, 1x Oil, 3x Sparkpowder
- Vegetables
- Berries
- Fresh barley
- Soybeans
- Fresh Wheat
- Dried Wheat
- Sweet vegetable cake
- Ingredients: 2x Giant Bee Honey, 3x Sap, 2x Rockarrot, 2x Longrass, 2x Savoroot, 4x Stimulants, 25x Fiber, 1x Water
How to breed the Kentrosaurus in ARK
This is how you prepare the breeding: If you have a male and female specimen, you build an enclosure that is large enough at best. Put both dinos in the pen and set them to “wander” via the command menu. Alternatively, you can also switch directly to “Pair”, but then there must always be a player nearby, otherwise the pairing will stop due to the rendering.
The breeding interval of a Kentrosaurus is 18 to 48 hours.
How to hatch eggs: If you get a fertilized Kentrosaurus egg from a successful mating, hatching begins. For this, the ambient temperature of the egg should be between 24 °C and 30 °C. According to standard settings, the small kentrosaurus baby will hatch after about 2-3 hours. After that, it takes about 5 hours of your attention, during which you keep putting berries, vegetables, etc. (see above) in its inventory. Pay attention to the embossing intervals every 8 hours to tickle the greatest potential out of the baby.
Once it gains juvenile status, it can feed from troughs on its own. The entire ripening time takes about 2 days and 3.5 hours.
