ARK: Survival Evolved: Mantis – How to Tame, Feed and Breed!

Deutsch English

Mantis is an oversized praying mantis who found her way into ARK: Survival Evolved with the Scorched Earth DLC. Aggressive and intelligent, she is super useful when tamed, as she can hold weapons and gathering tools in her hands.

Find out everything you need to know about the praying mantis in our mantis guide. But also how to catch him, tame him, feed him, and breed offspring too.

This is the Mantis in ARK: Survival Evolved

Appearance: The Mantis in ARK is visually similar to a normal Praying Mantis, except that it is a giant specimen. It usually appears in light green, brownish or yellowish colors.

Ferocious: Extremely intelligent and aggressive, the mantis will attack any Medium or smaller creature that dares to come near. She can leap at you from long range and if you’re not careful, swarm you with fellow creatures, ending in your lights out.

Tamed: Once you’ve tamed a mantis, it becomes a special mount that you can equip with weapons for battle or gathering tools for farming. This makes them a special battle beast or a good gatherer, depending on what you want to use them for.

How to tame the Mantis in ARK

The mantis is passively tamed, which means you have to get close to it and then feed it.

Place the Deathworm Horn in your slot 0 and approach the Mantis from behind. She must not see you, otherwise she would attack you directly. It is best to wear a ghillie suit. As soon as you get close enough to them, the following action appears: “Feed Deathworm Horn to tame it”. You carry out this action and then immediately retreat. Repeat this process until you have tamed Mantis. This can take a different amount of time depending on the level of the Mantis.

Make sure no predator has their sights on you or the mantis.

How to craft the Mantis Saddle and Mantis Gear

How to feed the Mantis in ARK

Once you have tamed a mantis, it is important to know what it likes to eat. Mantis is a carnivore, meaning it eats meat. However, she mainly eats Deathworm or Woolly Rhino Horn.

On Ragnarok you can find the Deathworms which you have to kill for these horns in the desert, or you can get them from Iceworm males in the Frozen Dungeon which you also have to kill.

How to breed the Mantis in ARK

This is how you prepare the breeding: If you have a male and female specimen, you build an enclosure that is large enough at best. Put both dinos in the pen and set them to “wander” via the command menu. Alternatively, you can also switch directly to “Pair”, but then there must always be a player nearby, otherwise the pairing will stop due to the rendering.

The breeding interval for a mantis is 18 to 48 hours.

How to Hatch Eggs: When you get a fertilized Mantis Egg from a successful mating, hatching begins. For this, the ambient temperature of the egg should be between 35 °C and 38 °C. According to standard settings, the little mantis baby hatches after about 3 hours. After that, it takes about 5.5 hours of your attention, during which you keep putting food in its inventory.

Once it gains juvenile status, it can feed from troughs on its own. The entire ripening time takes about 2 days and 6.5 hours.
