In Hogwarts Legacy you can finally explore the most famous school for witchcraft and wizardry on your own. Of course, there will be a lot of magic involved. How you can use these spells and how the combat system in Hogwarts Legacy works can be found out here.
In the meantime, a total of 26 different spells have been officially confirmed. Of course, the Harry Potter universe offers countless more spells and it is more than likely that more spells will be added in the near future. The Expecto Patronum spell, for example, has not been confirmed yet. However, some trailers have shown dementors, so the use of a Patronus is quite conceivable. But how do you use these spells? We have summarized everything you need to know about casting spells and the combat system in Hogwarts Legacy in this guide.
This is how the spells and combat system works in Hogwarts Legacy
At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see everything you need for your battles in the magical world. At the bottom right, you’ll see your so-called Spell-Diamond. This consists of four large and two small diamond symbols. The four large diamonds are slots that you can fill with individual spells. All four spells can be called up via a certain collect key (here in the picture the R2 key). If you keep this key pressed, you can use the spells separately (here by pressing the corresponding circle, square, X or triangle).
You can also just spam the R2 key to cast so-called standard spells. While the four spells in your diamond each have their own cooldown, standard spells can be cast at any time. The more powerful a spell is, the higher its cooldown.
When fighting multiple enemies at once, it is important to know which enemy you are casting spells against. To decide which enemy you’re going to attack, you’ll have to press the target button. For PlayStation players, this is again the right analog stick. When you press this, the next enemy is targeted and all future spells are cast on it. If you want to target another enemy, you’ll have to move the stick left or right accordingly.
Equip up to 16 spells
As you progress through the game, you’ll be able to unlock more Sepp-Diamonds. In total, you’ll be able to own up to four of them. You can then switch back and forth between these diammonds at will.
This means you can choose from a total of 16 different spells in battle. Depending on which spells you assign to your diamonds, you can cast different combos. This is where those who love to experiment until they find the ultimate combo will really have fun.
However, Hogwarts Legacy also dictates in a certain way which spells you must equip. This is because each spell has its own symbol, which is backed by a specific color. In gameplay trailers we have already seen that the defensive shields of our opponents also have different colors. There’s a good reason for that: because you can only break through a purple shield with a purple spell. Therefore, it will probably be necessary to always have several colors in each diamond.
You can combine and upgrade spells
By combining standard or basic spells with the spells from your diamond, you can charge the combo diamond (the left of the two small diamonds) with ancient magic. Once the bar next to it is full, you can cast a powerful finisher move on certain spells to flatten your opponents. As soon as this finisher is ready for use, the corresponding key combination is displayed above your opponent’s head (here L1 and R1). The green bar below the combo bar shows your lifepool and next to it you can see the number of available healing potions.
The individual spells can also be leveled up in different ways. This makes some spells stronger and others get completely new effects or are expanded. A good example of this is the spell “Descendo”. In the beginning, you can use this spell to throw enemies or objects to the ground. With the upgraded version of Descendo, you can hurl your opponents through the air and smash them to the ground several times.
Defense and protection spells
Since your opponents won’t be easily eliminated by you, you should also pay a lot of attention to your defense. You can either dodge enemy spells, e.g. with an elegant dodge roll, or you can simply tank them away with the spell “Protego”.
If an enemy throws a spell at you, it will be indicated by a yellow circle around your head. You can deflect such a spell in any direction by pressing the corresponding key. If you keep this deflect button pressed for a longer time, you will not only deflect the enemy spell, but also perform a counterattack.
Magic helpers and tools
At the bottom left you will find a minimap and a small circular slot, which you can use for tools, potions or magical creatures. These items can be used in combat to give you a tactical advantage. For example, you can bring out a mandrake that will hurt your opponents with its shrill scream.
That’s all the information you need to know about the combat system in Hogwarts Legacy. Now nothing stands in the way of your adventure in the magical world.
