Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are released today and, every time, everyone is wondering which starter Pokémon is the best for the journey through the Paldea region. We gauged the answer based on the three story paths as well as leveling options!
How do we determine the winner? To find out which starter Pokémon is the best and strongest in Scarlet and Violet, we need to dig deeper. We’ve chosen the best Starter Pokémon for the following sections of the new editions:
- Arena Battles
- Path of Legends
- Starfall Road (Team Star)
- Fastest Leveling
- Best overall Starter Pokémon.
We Test Which Starter Pokémon in Crimson & Purple is the Best
What starter Pokémon are there? In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as always, you have the choice between the classic types Fire, Water, and Gras. All starters get new types like Dark or Ghost with their evolutions:
- Fire starter: Fuecoco
- Water starter: Quaxly
- Gras starter: Sprigatito
The Best Starter Pokémon for Arena Battles
Arena battles work differently in Pokémon Crimson and Purple than you’re used to in previous installments of the series. There is no longer a fixed order for Arena Leaders that you follow. Instead, you can challenge each arena ladder when you want. And yet, a clear winner emerges here: So let’s take a look at all the Pokémon types that Paldea’s 8 Arena Leaders use:
However, the types are not evenly matched to the types of the starter Pokémon. So you can quickly see which Starter Pokémon is best for Arena battles in Crimson and Purple.
If the Starter Pokémon is super effective against the opponent type, it gets +2 points, if it is effective it gets +1 points. If the starter is Neutral, it gets 0 points and for Weakness and Extreme Weakness, it gets -1 and -2 points respectively.
|Gras||Super Effective||Neutral||Extreme Weakness|
|Water||Extreme Weakness||Super Effective||Neutral|
|Bug||Super Effective||Extreme Weakness||Neutral|
So the choice for the best starter Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet when it comes to Arena Battles goes to Fuecoco!
The Best Starter Pokémon for Path of Legends
In the “Path of Legends” story path, you will go on a quest to find 5 Titan Pokémon. These legendary Pokémon have the following types:
|Steel||Super Effective||Neutral||Super Effective|
The best starter Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet for Path of Legends is therefore Quaxly!
The Best Starter Pokémon to Face Team Star.
In this story path, you have to face the evil Team Star, who takes the place of Team Rocket. Team Star isn’t just haunting the Paldea region itself though, they’ve already made their way to your academy and are recruiting students. Reason enough to realign their chewers and choose the best starter Pokémon to fight them. Team Star uses the following Pokémon types:
The first place for the best starter Pokémon for the battle against Team Star is shared here by Fuecoco and Quaxly.

Bonus: Which Starter can be Leveled the Fastest at the Beginning of the Game?
In the first areas up to the arrival at the academy, the Paldea region is bursting with plant and beetle Pokémon. Water types are less common, and we didn’t see any Fire Pokémon at all. So let’s award some extra points for leveling up your starter:
- Fuecoco: +2
- Sprigatito: +1
- Quaxly: 0
This means that Fluecoco once again takes first place and is the starter in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that you can level up the fastest in the starting region. A guide to the best and fastest way to train your Pokémon can be found here:
Which is the best Starter Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet?
We come to the conclusion, Fuecoco is the best starter Pokémon in the Scarlet and Violet editions. In arena battles and in the fight against the nasty Team Star, it counters the opponent types the best. With a total of +11 points, Crocus thus secures a well-deserved first place.
Sprigatito is far behind in second place with +3 points. Quaxly takes 3rd place with +3 points as well. If we also add up how the evolutions of the starter Pokémon do, Fuecoco and Sprigatito gets +2 points and Quaxly +1 point:
- Fuecoco: 13 points
- Sprigatito: 5 points
- Quaxly: 4 points
