In the new co-op survival game Valheim, not much is possible without the wooden workbench. Their basic version will only bring you closer to Odin's blessing, which is why you should upgrade it more often. You can find out how exactly you do this here.

You have to know that: To make progress in Valheim, you have to discover and process all kinds of resources. This requires, among other things, a workbench that can be upgraded to level 5. Upgrading your bank allows you not only to build new but also improved tools and other items.

This is how you build a workbench

Your first steps: Surely you have already had your Viking build a workbench, otherwise, you just do the following: Get plenty of wood from (small) trees or branches lying around and pick up a few stones from the ground. If you don't already have these materials, you can make a construction hammer in the crafting menu.

Take the hammer in your hand and open the construction menu with the right mouse button. Here, you select the workbench (which requires ten units of wood) and place it in a buildable area. Make sure there is space around the bench for a small shelter, as it cannot be used without a roof.

This is how you upgrade the workbench

Basically, you are adding value to your workplace by expanding it. The objects used to upgrade your workbench can be found in the crafting menu. The extensions are marked here with a Star and tell you in the information text whether they are for the workbench or other working stations.

Of course, the developers have taken measures that you cannot improve the workbench to the maximum so quickly. For each upgrade level, you need individual resources that can be found in sometimes more, sometimes less dangerous areas or biomes.

For level 2 to 5 improvements, you will need:

  • Level 2: A chopping block (10x wood, 10x flint - the latter must first be discovered near water and picked up)
  • Level 3: Tanning Rack (10x wood, 10x flint, 20x leather snippets, 5x deer skin - deer can be found near water and in forests, but must be hunted with a bow)
  • Level 4: Adze (10x fine wood, 3x bronze - you get fine wood from birch trees, which are, however, very robust; bronze must be made with a forge)
  • Level 5: Tool Shelf (4x iron, 1x fine wood, 4x obsidian - in swamps you will find scrap iron that you have to melt down in the forge; obsidian can be mined in the mountains)

Near the workbench (in the house), we have placed three extensions from levels 2 to 4.

To upgrade the workbench, simply place the above items near it. The bank is then automatically upgraded according to the available upgrade items. For example, if you immediately set up the chopping block and the tanning rack next to the workbench, this corresponds to the third level.
