In our guide about the Hesperornis in ARK: Survival Evolved, you’ll learn everything you need to know about the duck-penguin mix. But also where to find it, how to tame it, how to feed it, and how to breed offspring.
The Hesperornis is a penguin-duck mix that spends most of its time in the water, where it is much faster and more agile. It is also capable of laying golden eggs regularly.
This is the Hesperornis in ARK: Survival Evolved
Appearance: Visually, the Hesperornis resembles a mix of duck and penguin, with a long neck and small needle teeth. It has a large beak and large feet resembling a duck’s. Its wings are smaller and unusable, and its legs are short and don’t work very fast on land.
Wild: On land, the Hesperornis is not very dangerous because it cannot fly, and its legs are very short, which makes it unable to walk fast. But it is significantly faster in the water, where it’s used to catch its prey as a snack. You can expect it to attack you as soon as you get too close. Normally you’d encounter the Hesperornis floating on the water. Keep being vigilant in the area of a Hesperornis because they are likely to lay a golden egg or two while they are hunting.
Domesticated: With a high number of tamed Hesperornis, you can create an egg farm through which you can get the special golden eggs faster, which give you an XP buff, for example, or are used for the production of special Kibble.

Taming the Hesperornis in ARK
Hesperornis are passively tamed, which means you have to feed them to tame them.
You have to end one or more fish first. Once you have done that, you carry the fish carcass in your hands towards the Hesperornis you want to tame. To be able to feed the fish to the Hesperornis, you have to get close to it. As soon as you are close to the Hesperornis, the command “Feed fish” appears, which you execute. You can also feed it while it attacks you, which it will most likely do since you are coming near. After you feed one fish, you must wait 30 seconds before feeding the next fish.
Effectiveness of fish, descending:
- Sabertooth Salmon
Tip: While taming, keep watching the Hesperornis because it may lay normal and golden eggs during the taming.

How to breed Hesperornis in ARK
This is how you prepare the breeding: If you have a male and female specimen, you build an enclosure that is large enough. Put both Dino’s in the pen and set them to “wander” via the command menu. Alternatively, you can also switch directly to “Pair”, but then there must always be a player nearby. Otherwise, the pairing will stop due to the rendering.
The breeding interval of a Hesperornis is 18 to 48 hours.
How to Hatch Eggs: The hatching begins when you get a fertilized Hesperornis Egg from a successful mating. For hatching, the ambient temperature of the egg should be between 22 °C and 30 °C and within the Egg-Incubator at 26 °C. According to standard settings, the little Hesperornis baby hatches after about 1.5 hours. After that, it needs about 3 hours of your attention, during which you must keep putting food in its inventory.
Once it gains juvenile status, it can feed itself from troughs. The total maturation time takes about 1 day and 4 hours.
