Find out everything you need to know about the Maewing in our ARK: Survival Evolved guide. But also how to catch it, tame it, feed it, and breed offspring too.

The Maewing was introduced to ARK through the Genesis Part: 2 DLC, where you can find it. Additionally, you are able to find the Maewing also on Fjordur within the Red Forest and on Lost Island in the desert.

This is the Maewing in ARK: Survival Evolved

Appearance: The Maewing is mixed out of a Platypus and a Sugarglider, but much bigger.

Wild: As a peaceful omnivore, it won't attack you, even if you hit it, it will only try to flee.

Domesticated: Tamed the Maewing is a real treasure, which can make your life in Ark much easier:

  • Although he isn't able to fly, he can glide through the air and along the ground. The Maewing also clears all smaller obstacles, such as stones, out of the way and is able to swim and dive.
  • Since you can craft the Maewing saddle at level 19, it is particularly helpful at the beginning, because it makes farming easier too.
  • For you, its most important ability is that it can raise your dinosaur babies. For raising or rather feeding, you must put your baby dino's preferred food in your Maewing's inventory and activate nursing as a feeding trough. You can increase the sphere of action by leveling nursing up. If you want to take the babies with you, you can place them in one of four baskets of the Maewing Saddle and ride off together. If you set the babies to follow you, you can also solve the imprinting through the walking challenge.
  • On a PVP-Server, the Maewing is usable to steal other players' baby dinos. For stealing, you have to get near to an enemy player's dino baby and pick it up.
  • The Maewing has no gender, but can still be bred once you have two specimens. As a consequence of having no gender, every Maewing is able to lay eggs. The eggs have different qualities that you need for cooking the different kibbles. You can see, in the chart below, how the chances are of which egg will be laid.
Quality Egg Size
Chance
Basic Extra Small 35 %
Simple Small 25 %
Regular Medium 17,5 %
Superior Large 12,5 %
Exceptional Extra Large 7,5 %
Extraordinary Special 2,5 %

How to tame Maewing in ARK

How to hunt the Maewing: Before firing your tranquilizer darts at the Maewing, you should immobilize it with a chain bola or net projectile, to prevent it from fleeing. Just aim one of the options at it and shoot it with it.

Once the Maewing is set, you can shoot the tranquilizer darts at it until it is unconscious.

How to tame it: Once he's unconscious, put food in its inventory. The fastest foods to tame it are the ones we listed below. To keep the Maewing senseless and the stun up, use the Anesthetic or Nacoberries.

How to craft the Maewing saddle

To craft the Maewing Saddle, you need to reach level 19 and gather 24 Engram Points to unlock the recipe. Now you need the following resources to craft it:

  • 320 Hide
  • 170 Fiber
  • 30 Metal Bars

What a Maewing in ARK eats

Once you have tamed your Maewing, it is important to know what it likes to eat. Maewings are omnivores, which makes the choice of food easier because you can offer meat, berries, vegetables, etc. and it will eat it.

Nevertheless, the Maewing prefers the following foods:

  • Basic Kibble:
    • Ingredients: 1x Extra Small Egg, 1x Cooked Meat, Cooked Fish Meat, Cooked Meat Jerky, 5x Fiber, 5x Mejoberry, 10x Armaberry, 10x Tintoberry, 1x Water
  • Raw Mutton:
    • You get it when gutting Ovis.
    • By cooking, it becomes the cooked lamb chop
  • Raw Prime Meat:
    • you gain when gutting larger creatures
    • by cooking, it becomes Cooked Prime Meat

Breeding the Maewing in ARK

This is how you prepare the breeding: If you have two specimens, you build an enclosure that is large enough at best. Put both dinos in the pen and set them to "wander" via the command menu. Alternatively, you can also switch directly to "Pair", but then there must always be a player nearby, otherwise the pairing will stop due to the rendering.

The breeding interval for a Maewing is 18 to 48 hours.

How to Hatch Eggs: When you get a fertilized Maewing Egg from a successful mating, the hatching begins. For hatching, the ambient temperature of the egg should be between 22 °C and 26 °C and within the Egg-Incubator at 24 °C. According to standard settings, the little Maewing baby hatches after about 1.5 hours. After that, it needs about 4.5 hours of your attention, during which you have to keep putting food in its inventory.

Once it gains juvenile status, it can feed from troughs on its own. The entire ripening time takes about 1 day and 22.5 hours.
