ARK: Survival Evolved: Oviraptor – How to Tame, Feed and Breed!

The Oviraptor is one of the most commonly tamed creatures in ARK: Survival Evolved. Although he is not rideable, he can be of great use to you. In our guide, we show you everything you need to know about the Oviraptor. From taming, feeding, and breeding, to its special use for your survival on the island.

In our guide to the Oviraptor, you will find out everything you need to know about the useful helper. But also how to catch him, tame him, feed him, and breed offspring too.

This is the Oviraptor in ARK: Survival Evolved

Appearance: The Oviraptor is characterized by its prominent horn on its forehead. Otherwise, it resembles the stature and physique – as the name already suggests – of the raptors.

Wild: Although it has a raptor inside it and is basically a carnivore, the Oviraptor prefers eggs above all. No nest is safe from him. The great strength of the Oviraptor is that it can secretly steal eggs from nests without incurring the mother’s wrath. In addition, he emits a pheromone that causes the surrounding creatures to lay more eggs.

Domesticated: So the Oviraptor’s pheromone is an easy and permanent way to increase egg production in your own camp, whether for food, breeding, or kibble. Thus, the Oviraptor is extremely useful, even if its small size and power make it unsuitable for combat or riding.

How to tame the Oviraptor in ARK

How to hunt the Oviraptor: Since the Oviraptor will flee immediately if you hit it or get too close, you must first pin it down with a bola. When the Oviraptor is immobilized, shoot a tranquilizer dart or two into its body. Due to the fact that Oviraptors have low health, you should be extra careful. He can be accidentally killed by too many tranquilizer darts.

How to tame him: Once he’s unconscious, put eggs in his inventory and feed them to him. If the Oviraptor threatens to wake up again in between, you can also feed it Narcoberries to increase the stun level again. The quickest way to tame an Oviraptor is to use these eggs:

  • Giganotosaurus Eggs
  • Quetzal Eggs
  • Rex Eggs
  • Spino Eggs

However, dodo eggs are also perfectly adequate, although you should bring a few more of these with you. Since the Oviraptor is primarily tamed for its pheromone, you should be on the lookout for a low-level specimen. The lower the level, the faster the Oviraptor is tamed, and the fewer eggs you need.

This is how you increase egg production in your base

Once you’ve tamed an Oviraptor, all you have to do is bring it to your base. You can set it to “wander” via the command menu. However, you should first tie your Oviraptor to a suitable spot or house it in an enclosure, otherwise, it will be constantly running around your base. You can also just fill his inventory with stones until he can’t move anymore.

Once the Oviraptor is set to roam, you will see an egg icon flash over all the female dinos in your base. Their egg production is now increased. This also ensures that your Oviraptor is fed, since it only eats eggs, except when it is a baby.

How to breed the Oviraptor in ARK

This is how you prepare the breeding: If you have a male and female specimen, you build an enclosure that is large enough at best. Place both dinos in the exhibit and set them to roam via the command menu. Alternatively, you can also switch directly to “Pair”, but then there must always be a player nearby, otherwise the pairing will stop due to the rendering.

The breeding interval of an Oviraptor is 18 to 48 hours.

How to Hatch Eggs: If you have obtained a fertilized Oviraptor egg from a successful mating, hatching begins. For this, the ambient temperature of the egg should be between 26 °C and 30 °C. According to standard settings, the small Oviraptor baby hatches after about 2 hours. After that, it takes almost 4 hours of your attention, during which you keep putting meat in its inventory.

Once it gains juvenile status, it can feed from troughs on its own. The total maturation time is about 1 day and 13 hours.
