You can obtain crystals in various ways. At the beginning, it is recommended to avoid confrontations with dangerous monsters or camps. Hanuman's Grotto is the best place for this -- marked on the map below. You'll only encounter a few Imps this far south, which don't do much damage. These small enemies are relatively easy to defeat with the first weapons. So enter the cave, it's full of crystals that you can easily collect.

There is also a chance that you will discover crystal in inventories or crates at various barbarian camps. However, to take out a camp you need better equipment than a blunt stone sword.
